In thoracic trauma, many cases may present with hemothorax, and, of those, a portion can complicate in empyema. These cases can reveal themselves to be of difficult management, particularly in peripheral hospitals with complicated access to thoracic surgery. Intrapleural fibrinolytic instillation can be of use and has been widely reported, mostly in the case of empyema.

- Balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) saw a decline in use after its introduction due to high restenosis rates and the rise of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), but it has recently gained traction as a temporary solution for patients in critical condition with severe aortic stenosis and cardiogenic shock.
- A study analyzed 98 BAV procedures from 2008 to 2018, finding that 14 were in patients with cardiogenic shock, with nine being performed emergently; notable findings included a mean patient age of 76.2 years and a thirty-day mortality rate of 33% for emergent cases.
- The results indicated no major complications post-procedure and showed a tendency for improved organ function
Primary peritonitis usually occurs in patients with comorbidities previously diagnosed with ascites. However, a primary peritoneal infection in previously healthy patients may also ensue. There has been an increase in reported cases of primary peritonitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes affecting mostly women.
