Article Synopsis
  • Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) on corticosteroids are at a greater risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes, making vaccination crucial; uptake of the original 2-dose series was high, but later doses' uptake is unclear.
  • In a study of 1,012 IBD patients, 71.9% received three COVID-19 vaccine doses, with factors like younger age, rural living, minority status, and lack of flu vaccination linked to incomplete vaccination.
  • Overall, 83.3% of 1,362 surveyed IBD patients completed the vaccination series, but younger individuals and those from certain demographics had higher rates of incompletion.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to investigate racial, ethnic, and geographic disparities in influenza vaccine uptake among adults with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) across two medical centers.
  • The findings revealed that non-Hispanic White patients and older individuals were more likely to receive the influenza vaccine, while Black patients and those from underserved areas had lower vaccination rates.
  • The research highlighted the need for further studies to explore ways to improve vaccination rates and address these disparities amongst IBD patients.

The function of the pharynx, an organ in the model system Caenorhabditis elegans, has been correlated with life span and motility (another measure of health) since 1980. In this study, in order to further understand the relationship between organ function and life span, we measured the age-related decline of the pharynx using an electrophysiological approach. We measured and analyzed electropharyngeograms (EPG) of wild type animals, short-lived hsf-1 mutants, and long-lived animals with genetically decreased insulin signaling or increased heat shock pathway signaling; we recorded a total of 2,478 EPGs from 1,374 individuals.
