The toxigenic strains secrete tilymicin and tilivalline enterotoxins, which cause antibiotic-associated hemorrhagic colitis. Both enterotoxins are non-ribosomal peptides synthesized by enzymes encoded in two divergent operons clustered in a pathogenicity island. Endosymbiotic reproductive manipulators are widely studied as sources of post-zygotic isolation in arthropods, but their effect on pre-zygotic isolation between genetically differentiated populations has garnered less attention. We tested this using two partially isolated populations of the red and green colour forms of Tetranychus urticae, either uninfected or infected with different Wolbachia strains, one inducing cytoplasmic incompatibility and the other not. We first investigated male and female preferences, and found that, in absence of infection, females were not choosy, but all males preferred red-form females.

Normally, von Willebrand factor (VWF) remains inactive unless its A1A2 domains undergo a shear stress-triggered conformational change. We demonstrated the capacity of a recombinant A2 domain of VWF to bind and to affect fibrin formation, altering the fibrin clot structure. The data indicated that VWF contains an additional binding site for fibrin in the A2 domain that plays a role in the incorporation of VWF to the polymerizing fibrin.

Following prolonged and unusual seismic activity that caused significant structural damage, mainly in the southwest part of the island of Puerto Rico, thousands of area residents were forced to leave their homes and establish improvised camps. The efficacy of BCG vaccines against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) strains of lineage 2 (Beijing) in preclinical models and humans has been questioned. We have developed BCG∆BCG1419c, by deletion of BCG1419c in BCG Pasteur, which improved control of tuberculosis (TB) in preclinical models. Here, we compared the capacity of BCG and BCG∆BCG1419c to induce autophagy in murine macrophages, modify c-di-GMP content and transcript levels of BCG1416c, encoding the enzyme responsible for c-di-GMP synthesis/degradation, and of BCG1419c, encoding the phosphodiesterase involved in c-di-GMP degradation.

Bleeding associated with left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation has been attributed to the loss of large von Willebrand factor (VWF) multimers to excessive cleavage by ADAMTS-13, but this mechanism is not fully supported by the current evidence. We analyzed VWF reactivity in longitudinal samples from LVAD patients and studied normal VWF and platelets exposed to high shear stress to show that VWF became hyperadhesive in LVAD patients to induce platelet microvesiculation. Platelet microvesicles activated endothelial cells, induced vascular permeability, and promoted angiogenesis in a VWF-dependent manner.
