A simple and sensitive methodology for the simultaneous determination of levodopa and carbidopa in pharmaceutical samples is described. The method combines the advantages of fluorescence with partial least-squares (PLS) analysis, and requires no previous separation steps. The developed method is based on the oxidation of levodopa and carbidopa by cerium(IV) in a sulfuric acid medium and monitoring the fluorescence of the formed Ce(III) at lambda(exc) = 255 nm and lambda(em) = 355 nm.

The combination of unfolded partial least-squares (U-PLS) with residual bilinearization (RBL) has not been properly exploited to process experimental second-order spectroscopic information, although it is able to achieve the important second-order advantage. Among other desirable properties, the technique can handle incomplete calibration information, i.e.

A rapid, selective, sensitive and simple fluorescence method was developed for the direct determination of celecoxib in capsules. The capsules were emptied, pulverized and dissolved in either ethanol or acetonitrile, sonicated and filtered. Direct fluorescence emission was measured at 355+/-5 nm (exciting at 272 nm).

A rapid, selective, sensitive and simple fluorescence method was developed for the direct determination of naproxen in tablets. The tablets were triturated, dissolved in either NH(3) or NaOH solution, sonicated, filtered and then direct fluorescence emission was read at 353 nm (exciting at 271 nm). In order to validate the method the results were compared with those obtained by the USP XXIV NF 19 Pharmacopeia reference method (high performance liquid chromatography).
