The first search for soft unclustered energy patterns (SUEPs) is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, collected in 2016-2018 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Such SUEPs are predicted by hidden valley models with a new, confining force with a large 't Hooft coupling. In events with boosted topologies, selected by high-threshold hadronic triggers, the multiplicity and sphericity of clustered tracks are used to reject the background from standard model quantum chromodynamics.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates cancer incidence trends from 2008-2017 in Italy among individuals aged 20-49, utilizing data from 20 cancer registries that cover about one-third of the population.
  • Results show that cancer rates were nearly double for women compared to men, particularly due to breast and thyroid cancers, with significant variations in incidence trends across different cancer types.
  • The findings indicate no consistent increase for early-onset cancers in Italy, with rising rates for some cancers offset by declines in others, underscoring the need for preventive measures and careful screening strategies.

Objective: The diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma (MM) can be devastating for both patients and caregivers, who may experience intense suffering from a physical, psychological, and interpersonal perspective. Despite the extensive literature on caregiver distress, there is a lack of validated measures to provide evidence of psychological distress of caregivers of MM patients. Therefore, in a previous study we developed the Mesothelioma Psychological Distress Tool-Caregivers (MPDT-C) to evaluate the specific profile of psychological distress in this population.

Background: Increased lung-cancer risks for low socioeconomic status (SES) groups are only partially attributable to smoking habits. Little effort has been made to investigate the persistent risks related to low SES by quantification of potential biases.

Methods: Based on 12 case-control studies, including 18 centers of the international SYNERGY project (16,550 cases, 20,147 controls), we estimated controlled direct effects (CDE) of SES on lung cancer via multiple logistic regression, adjusted for age, study center, and smoking habits, and stratified by sex.

Background: In differentiated/poorly differentiated (DTC/PDTC) or medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) treated with kinase inhibitors (KIs), additional treatments (ATs) can be performed in selected cases.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed all the ATs performed in our center in KI-treated TC patients, evaluating the subsequent KI modulation, the local PD in case of loco-regional procedure (LRP) and the AT-related complications. DTC/PDTC patients with or without progressive disease before the first AT (PD and NO PD GROUP, respectively) were analysed separately.

The production of ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions is studied in their dimuon decay channel using the CMS detector at the LHC. The ϒ(3S) meson is observed for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, with a significance above 5 standard deviations. The ratios of yields measured in Pb-Pb and pp collisions are reported for both the ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons, as functions of transverse momentum and Pb-Pb collision centrality.

Background: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that proinflammatory cytokines correlate with knee loading mechanics during gait following a mechanical walking stimulus in subjects 2 years after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Elevated systemic levels of proinflammatory cytokines can be sustained for years after injury. Considering roughly 50% of these patients progress to Osteoarthritis 10-15 years after injury, a better understanding of the role of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α and Interleukin-1β on Osteoarthritis risk is needed.
