Evidence for differential photic regulation of pineal melatonin synthesis in teleosts.

The aim of this study was to compare the circadian control of melatonin production in teleosts. To do so, the effects of ophthalmectomy on circulating melatonin rhythms were studied along with ex vivo pineal culture in six different teleosts. Results strongly suggested that the circadian control of melatonin production could have dramatically changed with at least three different systems being present in teleosts when one considers the photic regulation of pineal melatonin production.

We investigated the effect of ploidy on osmoregulatory, stress and immune responses in non-smolting rainbow trout during saltwater adaptation. Sibling groups of diploid and triploid trout were acclimated in freshwater (FW) and then subjected to abrupt transfer to full strength (35ppt) saltwater (SW) or back to FW. Fish were sampled pre-stress, and 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 168h post-stress.

[A new type of acetabular fracture: "true" posterosuperior fracture, a case report].

We report a new variety of acetabular fracture. This posterosuperior fracture affected the acetabular roof and the iliac wing as other superior fractures and presented a supplementary fracture line disjoining the major part of the posterior wall. Two our knowledge, in a series of 940 fractures of the acetabulum, Letournel alone described two cases of superior fractures involving the roof with a slightly anterior fracture line in the iliac wing but with an intact posterior wall in both cases.

We report an illustrative case of bilateral Moore arthroplasty with the clinical and radiographic results at 36 years follow-up. The femoral prostheses were implanted for necrosis of the femoral head when the patient was 46 years old. Effectiveness and tolerability of prolonged linezolid treatment for chronic osteomyelitis: a retrospective study.

Background: Linezolid is an oxazolidinone agent which is apparently well designed for treating chronic osteomyelitis, but data on effectiveness and tolerability as prolonged therapy is currently lacking.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness and tolerability of linezolid in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis.

Methods: The charts of hospitalized patients who had been treated with linezolid for >4 weeks because of chronic osteomyelitis and were followed up for > or =12 months after the end of treatment were retrospectively reviewed for clinical outcome and tolerability.

[Computer-assisted positioning of the acetabular cup for total hip arthroplasty based on joint kinematics without prior imaging: preliminary results with computed tomographic assessment].

Purpose Of The Study: Most navigation systems for computer-assisted total hip arthroplasty (THA) require prior computed tomography (CT) or acquisition of multiple bone landmarks on the pelvis. In order to avoid these problems, we developed a computer-assisted navigation system without CT based on a kinematic approach to the hip joint. The principle is to orient the cup in relation to the cone describing the hip joint range of motion.

The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the light sensitivity of two commercially important, phylogenetically different teleost species in terms of melatonin production. Three series of experiments were performed on both Atlantic salmon and European sea bass. First, a range of light intensities were tested ex vivo on pineal melatonin production in culture during the dark phase.
