Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to test a new decontamination kit, the Myco-TB procedure, for respiratory specimens to detect mycobacteria, comparing it to the existing Zephiran method.
  • A total of 387 respiratory specimens were analyzed, with results showing higher sensitivity for the Myco-TB method in culture (87%) compared to Zephiran (67%), and even higher when combined with the MGIT™ system (89%).
  • The Myco-TB method also had lower contamination rates (4% with MGIT™) and was found to be easy and fast to perform, while maintaining similar sensitivity in direct microscopy when centrifugation was adjusted to 20 minutes.

In order to identify current trends in anaerobic bacteraemia, a 10-year retrospective study was performed in the University Hospital Brussel, Belgium. All clinically relevant bacteraemia detected from 2004 until 2013 were included. Medical records were reviewed in an attempt to define clinical parameters that might be associated with the occurrence of anaerobic bacteraemia.
