  • Selenium is an antioxidant trace element that may offer benefits as a complementary treatment for cancer patients, and this systematic review evaluates its effectiveness.
  • A systematic search of five databases resulted in the inclusion of 12 studies with nearly 2500 cancer patients, focusing on various cancer types and treatment outcomes.
  • The review found mixed results, indicating that selenium supplementation might reduce radiotherapy-related toxicities in patients with selenium deficiency, but overall effectiveness for survival and quality of life remains unclear due to methodological issues in the studies.

The S3-guideline on endometrial cancer, first published in April 2018, was reviewed in its entirety between April 2020 and January 2022 and updated. The review was carried out at the request of German Cancer Aid as part of the Oncology Guidelines Program and the lead coordinators were the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG), the Gynecology Oncology Working Group (AGO) of the German Cancer Society (DKG) and the German Cancer Aid (DKH). The guideline update was based on a systematic search and assessment of the literature published between 2016 and 2020.

A large amount of published research points to the interesting concept (hypothesis) that magnesium (Mg) status may have relevance for the outcome of COVID-19 and that Mg could be protective during the COVID disease course. As an essential element, Mg plays basic biochemical, cellular, and physiological roles required for cardiovascular, immunological, respiratory, and neurological functions. Both low serum and dietary Mg have been associated with the severity of COVID-19 outcomes, including mortality; both are also associated with COVID-19 risk factors such as older age, obesity, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and asthma.

Purpose: For patients with a cancer diagnosis, coping abilities are of high importance. Cancer patients with a high sense of coherence may cope better. The purpose of this study is to learn more about the correlation of sense of coherence and different aspects, such as demographics, psychological factors, lifestyle, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and lay aetiology.

Purpose: Chemotherapy-related polyneuropathy (CIPN) is a very common, often dose-limiting side effect that affects the patients' quality of life. Treatment usually consists of a combination of medicinal, medical, and individualized treatment approaches, although the effectiveness of these therapies is insufficient for many patients. The aim of this article is to review and evaluate the impact of CIPN on patients' daily lives and possible effective treatment approaches.

Background: The usage of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widespread among cancer patients. While reasons for and aims of using CAM have been evaluated in many studies, less is known about whether patients' concepts of how and why cancer develops has an influence on the choice of the CAM method.

Methods: We pooled the data from all studies of our working group containing questions on lay etiological concepts and CAM usage and reanalyzed them with respect to the associations between these parameters.

Background/aim: People who are undergoing cancer treatment often ask themselves what they can do in addition to conventional medical therapy with regard to nutrition, activity, and complementary methods. However, we know little about the motivation why people opt for one or the other measure. The aim of this study was therefore to examine the extent of physical activity (PA), healthy nutrition, and the use of complementary methods in relation to both demographic and psychological data.

Objective: Are there any evidence-based medicine (EBM)-supported treatment approaches of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) methods for urological oncologists?

Methods: We reviewed the actual German S3 guidelines "Supportive Care" and "Complementary Medicine" as well as the online-tool Onkopedia for recommendations about essential trace elements (Zn, Se, Mn, Fe), vitamins (A, B, C, D, E), and electrolytes (Mg, Ca). Furthermore, we added results of randomized trials to present potential future developments.

Results: Each therapy with micronutrients should be based on laboratory observation of a deficit.

We previously created the list of traditional German medicinal plants taking into account the symptoms of bloating, fullness, diarrhoea, constipation, and nausea.

Purpose: In less than one and a half year, the COVID-19 pandemic has nearly brought to a collapse our health care and economic systems. The scientific research community has concentrated all possible efforts to understand the pathogenesis of this complex disease, and several groups have recently emphasized recommendations for nutritional support in COVID-19 patients. In this scoping review, we aim at encouraging a deeper appreciation of magnesium in clinical nutrition, in view of the vital role of magnesium and the numerous links between the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection and magnesium-dependent functions.
