Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) as the standard treatment for conditions like acute cholecystitis and biliary pancreatitis, aiming to identify factors that predict treatment outcomes.
  • It analyzed 466 patients over 17 months, determining that around 10% experienced "suboptimal treatment," significantly linked to age and low albumin levels.
  • Findings revealed that postoperative complications were associated with age, admission day, and male sex, while longer hospital stays were related to age, low albumin, and delays in surgery, which can help guide patient care decisions.

Background: Elderly patients with glioblastoma are perceived to face a poor prognosis with perceptions surrounding older age and a relative lack of randomized data contributing. This study evaluated survival prognosticators in elderly glioblastoma patients to more accurately guide their treatment.

Methods: The records of 169 elderly (≥70 years) patients with a new diagnosis of glioblastoma who had undergone neurosurgical intervention were retrospectively examined for patient sex, age, performance status, comorbidities, MGMT promoter methylation, surgical intervention, and chemoradiation regime.

We report the symptom evolution of a young female trauma patient leading to a diagnosis of fat embolism syndrome (FES). Twenty-four hours post-trauma she developed respiratory distress, followed by transient neurological compromise and later petechia. The subtle and fluctuating nature of her presentation made the diagnosis via existing clinical criteria challenging, as did the lack of specificity of thoracic computerized tomography due to the concurrent coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
