Ultrasound guidance has been reported to facilitate radial artery catheterization compared with the palpation method. However, a recent meta-analysis showed that there was not significant differences in the first attempt success rate between the long-axis in-plane (LA-IP) method and the short-axis out-of-plane method. In 2023, we started using a novel T-type probe.

Article Synopsis
  • Continuous arterial blood pressure measurement is important for monitoring high-risk patients during surgery, and a new device, Mill Suss™, uses near-infrared laser light to help visualize veins and arteries for easier access.
  • A study tested the effectiveness of the Mill Suss-guided method versus traditional ultrasound-guided methods for radial artery catheterization, involving 72 adults split into two groups.
  • Results showed that the Mill Suss method significantly reduced the time needed for successful catheterization, although the number of attempts was similar between both groups, suggesting experience might play a role.

Article Synopsis
  • Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) can worsen health outcomes and may be linked to neuroinflammation triggered by anesthesia and surgery.
  • The study compared the effects of desflurane and sevoflurane anesthetics on cognitive function in patients over 65 undergoing long surgeries.
  • Results showed that elderly patients anesthetized with desflurane had significantly improved cognitive function and a better recovery experience than those receiving sevoflurane.
