HbA1c is a widely utilized biomarker for the management of diabetes mellitus. The presence of variant hemoglobins might interfere with HbA1c measurement using different methods. We herein describe Hb Agenogi (β90Glu → Lys) with type 2 diabetes mellitus whose HbA1c measured by immunoassay (IA) showed falsely high levels while HbA1c measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in the standard mode (SM) showed falsely low levels.

Elcatonin, which is effective for lower back pain of osteoporosis, has a physiological action of reducing gastric acid. We examine whether or not this drug would alleviate GERD symptoms as well as lower back pain in patients with osteoporosis.

In the present study, we measured urinary concentration of neopterin in patients with malignant hematological disorders and investigated the relationship between urinary neopterin levels and laboratory indices for cellular immunity. Urine neopterin levels were correlated with serum sIL-2R levels in the patients with malignant lymphoma, and inversely correlated with lymphocyte reactivity with ConA in the patients with acute myelocytic leukemia.

Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), an NO donor, had cytotoxic effects on the cells of some patients with malignant lymphoma (ML), acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) or chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMMoL), but not with multiple myeloma. Cultured cells from the ML patient remained sensitive to SNP after the cells became resistant to anti-cancer drugs.

However, recent studies have demonstrated the occurrence of nNOS in the somatotrophs and lactotrophs. In the present study, we investigated effects of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), and 17beta-estradiol on nitric oxide (NO) release in cultured rat anterior pituitary cells in vitro.

When G-CSF was administered by continuous subcutaneous infusion at a rate of 72 microg/day for 5 days, the numbers of white blood cells and granulocytes rapidly increased to maximal levels. CD34+ cells were mobilized to the peripheral blood in 3 days, and the maximal level was reached 4 or 5 days after the start of treatment.
