The design and performance of the ACE1 (Active Complex Electrode) electrical impedance tomography system for single-ended phasic voltage measurements is presented. The design of the hardware and calibration procedures allow for reconstruction of conductivity and permittivity images. Phase measurement is achieved with the ACE1 active electrode circuit which measures the amplitude and phase of the voltage and the applied current at the location at which current is injected into the body.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to identify safe ventilation patterns for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome by using a computational model to analyze the relationship between ventilator settings and lung injury.
  • Researchers conducted mechanical ventilation on BALB/c mice, some of which were previously exposed to injurious bronchoalveolar lavage, and measured their pressure-volume loops to assess lung injury.
  • The analysis found that mechanical power dissipation and strain heterogeneity are the most effective indicators for predicting different levels of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI).

A real-time implementation of Calderón's method for the reconstruction of a 2-D conductivity from electrical impedance tomography data is presented, in which domain-specific modeling is taken into account. This is the first implementation of Calderón's method that accounts for correct modeling of non-symmetric domain boundaries in image reconstruction. The domain-specific Calderón's method is derived and reconstructions from experimental tank data are presented, quantifying the distortion when correct modeling is not included in the reconstruction algorithm.

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a technique which can image the varying electrical properties of biological tissues. For clinical use of EIT, it can be advantageous to know both tissue conductivity and permittivity. Presented is the hardware design for the pairwise current injection active complex electrode (ACE1) EIT system which measures phasic voltages for conductivity and permittivity image reconstruction.
