Introduction: Achenbach syndrome is a rare, benign condition characterized by painful discoloration of a finger. Recognition of this syndrome prevents unnecessary costly workup and risky interventions.
Case Report: A healthy, 54-year-old female was transferred to our emergency department (ED) from a community ED for vascular evaluation of discoloration and numbness to her finger.
Background Acute appendicitis remains a common surgical pathology, with the accepted standard of care being appendectomy. However, in cases of acute appendicitis complicated by an inflammatory phlegmon, a dilemma remains regarding the best management options. The aim of our study was to examine the outcomes for patients with an appendiceal phlegmon, comparing emergency appendectomy with those who had initial conservative management followed by subsequent interval appendectomy.

Background: Haemorrhoids remain a highly prevalent condition in Australia, affecting 39% of the adult Australian population. While haemorrhoidectomy remains the gold standard in the management of haemorrhoids, newer techniques such as haemorrhoid artery ligation-recto anal repair (HAL-RAR) are emerging as promising management modalities. We compare the efficacy of non-Doppler guided (non-DG) HAL-RAR versus Doppler-guided (DG) HAL-RAR in the management of haemorrhoids.

Importance: Depression is more prevalent among individuals with cancer than in the general population and is correlated with increased mortality in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) in particular.
Objective: To compare the prevalence of depression between patients with HNC and patients with other cancers.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective cohort study used population-level data on patients aged 18 years or older with cancer who participated in the 2019 National Health Interview Survey and had completed the Personal Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8).
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a population of vesicular bodies originating from cells, and EVs have been proven to have the potential to deliver different cargos, such as RNAs. However, conventional methods are not able to encapsulate long RNAs into EVs efficiently or may compromise the integrity of EVs. In this study, we have devised a strategy to encapsulate long circRNAs (>1000 nt) into EVs by harnessing the sorting mechanisms of cells.

The mechanism of this inhibition, however, has been exclusively attributed to LOX depletion of TME lactate, a cancer cell energy source, and production of HO, an oxidative stressor. We report that TME lactate triggers the assembly of the lactate receptor hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 1 (HCAR1)-associated protein complex, which includes GRB2, SOS1, KRAS, GAB1, and PI3K, for the activation of both the RAS and the PI3K oncogenic signaling pathways in breast cancer (BCa) cells.

We investigated the impact of intra-fractional 6-dimensional corrections during frameless image-guided radiosurgery (IGRS) for pain outcome in TGN patients.
Materials And Methods: A total of 41 sets of intra-fractional corrections from 35 patients with TGN treated by frameless IGRS from 2009 to 2013 were retrospectively studied.
The amygdala is an established site for fear memory formation, and clinical studies suggest involvement of hormone signaling cascades in development of trauma-related disorders. While an association of thyroid hormone (TH) status and mood disorders is established, the related brain-based mechanisms and the role of TH in anxiety disorders are unknown. Here we examine the role that TH receptor (TR, a nuclear transcriptional repressor when unbound and a transcriptional activator when bound to TH) may have in mediating the initial formation of fear memories in the amygdala.

Caregiver burden, anticipatory grief, and proinflammatory cytokine production may contribute to depressive symptoms among caregivers. People who report childhood trauma are more likely to have exaggerated stress responses that may also contribute to depressive symptoms in adulthood.

While early-stage thyroid cancer often progresses slowly, it is crucial to determine whether treatment delays associated with the pandemic have impacted the clinical presentation and management of advanced-stage thyroid cancer. The purpose of our study was to determine the impact of the early COVID-19 pandemic on thyroid cancer presentation and treatment times.
