Biofabricating 3D cardiac tissues that mimic the native myocardial tissue is a pivotal challenge in tissue engineering. In this study, we fabricate 3D cardiac tissues with controlled, multidirectional cellular alignment and directed or twisting contractility. We show that multidirectional filamented light can be used to biofabricate high-density (up to 60 × 10 cells mL) tissues, with directed uniaxial contractility (3.

We describe a unique case of skeletal and extraskeletal angiomatosis complicated by Kasabach-Merritt syndrome. The patient was a 3-year-old boy, who presented with involvement of both femurs and left tibia, as well as with soft tissue lesions of the left thigh. At birth, multiple hemangiomas of the soft tissues of the frontal and parietal scalp had been identified, together with a space-occupying lesion of the lung.

Introduction: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is currently considered the gold standard in surgical treatment of femur and tibial shaft fractures in school age paediatric patients. Although elastic intramedullary nails are available in both titanium (Ti) and stainless steel (SS) alloy, titanium nails are most commonly used. Nevertheless, there is still contrasting evidence as to whether the use of Ti nails can offer better outcomes in terms of fracture healing and stability over SS nails.

Ca play a key role in cell signaling across organisms. The question of how a simple ion can mediate specific outcomes has spurred research into the role of Ca signatures and their encoding and decoding machinery. Such studies have frequently focused on Ca alone and our understanding of how Ca signaling is integrated with other responses is poor.

Obesity has been increasingly recognized as a risk factor for kidney disease and both proteinuria and microalbuminuria have been associated with obesity. The actual prevalence of microalbuminuria and proteinuria in obese patients in the United States (US) has not been clearly described in the literature. Furthermore, obesity is associated with risk factors of kidney disease, such as diabetes and hypertension (HTN), and the prevalence of proteinuria and albuminuria excluding these risk factors is uncertain.

Purpose: The use of lung ultrasound (LUS) to identify extravascular lung water has received increasing acceptance. Sonographic B-lines, discrete vertical lines that originate from the pleura, represent pulmonary edema and are correlated with the accumulation of fluid. The goal of this study was to evaluate the utility of LUS to determine the accuracy of prescribed dry weight (DW) in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients and to ascertain the adequacy of fluid removal.

Ca2+ signals are transient, hence, upon a stimulus-induced increase in cytosolic Ca2+ concentration, cells have to re-establish resting Ca2+ levels. Ca2+ extrusion is operated by a wealth of transporters, such as Ca2+ pumps and Ca2+/H+ antiporters, which often require a rise in Ca2+ concentration to be activated. Here, we report a regulatory fine-tuning mechanism of the Arabidopsis thaliana plasma membrane-localized Ca2+-ATPase isoform ACA8 that is mediated by calcineurin B-like protein (CBL) and CBL-interacting protein kinase (CIPK) complexes.

The plasma membrane Ca ATPases (PMCA pumps) have a long, cytosolic C-terminal regulatory region where a calmodulin-binding domain (CaM-BD) is located. Under basal conditions (low Ca), the C-terminal tail of the pump interacts with autoinhibitory sites proximal to the active center of the enzyme. In activating conditions (i.

Purpose: Functional iron deficiency (FID) is a major cause of persistent anemia in dialysis patients and also contributes to a suboptimal response to erythropoietin (Epo) administration. Vitamin C acts as an enzyme cofactor and enhances mobilization of the ferrous form of iron to transferrin thus increasing its bioavailability. High-dose intravenous vitamin C has been shown to decrease the Epo requirement and improve hemoglobin levels in previous studies.

Introduction: Long-acting beta agonists (LABAs) are effective for controlling asthma, however questions about their safety have led to concerns over use. Genetic polymorphisms at the 16 amino acid position of the beta-2 adrenergic receptor gene (B2AR) may be associated with increased risk.

Methods: A randomized, double blind study was conducted in patients with moderate to severe asthma being treated with combined inhaled corticosteroids/LABA (ICS/LABA), comparing the effect of LABA continuation versus withdrawal on asthma outcomes among patients stratified by B2AR genotype (Arg/Arg vs.

The pressor and antidiuretic actions of arginine vasopressin (AVP) have been well documented. This review focuses on the less widely appreciated actions of AVP which also have important physiologic functions and when better understood may provide important insights into common disease states. These actions include effects on pain perception and bone structure as well as important relationships to the varied components of metabolic syndrome.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1), also known as von Recklinghausen's disease, is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder. NF-I vasculopathy has been used to describe various vascular malformations associated with NF-1. Secondary hypertension related to NF-1 vasculopathy has been reported because of renal artery stenosis, coarctation of the abdominal aorta and other vascular lesions; however, coarctation of the thoracic aorta has seldom been reported.

Plant auto-inhibited Ca²⁺-ATPases (ACA) are crucial in defining the shape of calcium transients and therefore in eliciting plant responses to various stimuli. Arabidopsis thaliana genome encodes ten ACA isoforms that can be divided into four clusters based on gene structure and sequence homology. While isoforms from clusters 1, 2 and 4 have been characterized, virtually nothing is known about members of cluster 3 (ACA12 and ACA13).
