Photoperiod and temperature are two of the most powerful environmental cues that entrain circadian clocks. Being ectothermic, fish must keep their body temperature within a physiological range to optimize biological processes mainly applying behavioral strategies. Here, we developed a low-cost, automated system that allows to create a horizontal multiple-step thermal gradient and video record fish behavior for long-term periods.

Phase change materials (PCMs) have shown high potential for latent thermal energy storage (LTES) through their integration in building materials, with the aim of enhancing the efficient use of energy. Although research on PCMs began decades ago, this technology is still far from being widespread.

In this investigation, we have developed a user-friendly, automated, modular, and low-cost swim tunnel that permits to study the performance of one or more fish separately, as well as a small group of individuals. To validate our swim tunnel, we assessed swimming activity of four different species (zebrafish, medaka, guppy, and cavefish) recording reliable data of swimming behavior and performance.
