Vascular calcification (VC) is a biological phenomenon characterized by an accumulation of calcium and phosphate deposits within the walls of blood vessels causing the loss of elasticity of the arterial walls. VC plays a crucial role in the incidence and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), leading to a significant increase in cardiovascular mortality in these patients. Different conditions such as age, sex, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and hypertension are the main risk factors in patients affected by chronic kidney disease.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAnemia and mineral and bone disorder (MBD) are significant complications of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The erythropoietin (Epo) pathway plays a key role in both of these processes in CKD. Another molecule that plays an important role in CKD-MBD is fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-23, whose main role is to maintain serum phosphate levels in the normal range, acting via its co-receptor Klotho; however, its activity may also be related to anemia and inflammation.

Monitoring restenosis onset through biomarkers is crucial in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate inflammation biomarkers in CEA and CAS to determine their predictive value for restenosis risk postprocedure.

Numerous biomarkers allow for its study and characterization, particularly those related to "omics" sciences. Through the most common research databases, we report representative studies about carotid stenosis biomarkers based on genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics in a narrative review.

Systemic mitochondrial dysfunction is pervasive in end-stage kidney disease and may contribute to CV complications. We tested the clinical significance of circulating MOTS-c, a small mitochondrial-derived peptide, as a biomarker for improving mortality and CV risk prediction in hemodialysis (HD) patients.

In a multicenter ESKD-HD cohort, we tested the prognostic yield of the assessment of circulating Humanin, a small mitochondrial-derived peptide involved in CV protection, on CV events and mortality.
Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational, pilot study on 94 prevalent HD patients.
Background: Fabry disease (FD) is a multisystem, monogenic, X-linked storage disorder caused by mutations in the GLA gene, resulting in reduced alfa-galactosidase A enzyme activity. This effect leads to the accumulation of glycosphingolipids, particularly globotriaosylceramide, in various tissues, including the heart, kidney, vasculature, smooth muscle, and peripheral nervous system. Hemizygous males are usually more severely affected than females, in whom random inactivation of an X chromosome may lead to variable phenotype.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) remains a significant complication following major cardiac surgery. Marinobufagenin (MBG), a cardiotonic steroid involved in sodium balance and blood pressure regulation, has been linked to organ damage after ischemia-reperfusion events. This pilot, prospective study investigates the utility of circulating MBG to improve AKI risk assessment in cardiac surgery patients as a stand-alone biomarker and after inclusion in a validated risk model (STS-AKI score).

Lysosomal storage is not the unique player in organ failure and different mechanisms could drive tissue damage, including endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and its related signaling pathway's activation. We identified a new missense variant in the signal peptide of gene, c.

Recently, selenoprotein-p1 (SEPP1), a selenium transporter, mainly released by the liver, has emerged as a promising plasmatic biomarker of AKI as a consequence of cardio-surgery operations. The aim of the present study was to investigate, on an in vitro model of hypoxia induced in renal tubular cells, HK-2, the effects of sodium selenite (NaSeO) and to evaluate the expression of SEPP1 as a marker of injury.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a disorder that causes changes in both the structure and function of the kidneys, causing complications such as hypertension, edema, and oliguria. Renal fibrosis is also a common pathological feature of CKD. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases that degrade extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins.

The aim of our prospective monocentric study was to investigate the role of selenoprotein 1 (SEEP 1) as a potential biomarker for assessing the risk of myocardial injury after cardiac surgery. : Circulating SEPP1 was measured in the blood of 45 patients before surgery and at 4 h, 8 h and 12 h after CPB by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); (3) : circulating SEPP-1 levels measured 4 h after surgery were strongly correlated with CK-MB levels measured at 48 h (R = 0.

We enrolled 47 adult patients with CKD (mean CKD-Epi 40.

Indeed, this compound exerts well-known systemic pleiotropic effects and may thus bring important benefits against various pathological conditions like neuropathic pain, rhinitis, itching, or chronic inflammation. Yet, little is known about the possible biological activity of capsaicin at the kidney level, as this aspect has only been addressed by sparse experimental investigations.

The main objectives of this review are to analyze a specific family of MPs, the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), in the most common chronic and complex diseases that affect patients' social lives and to better understand the nature of the associations between MMPs and the psychosocial environment. In accordance with the PRISMA extension for a scoping review, an examination was carried out.

The prevalence of childhood obesity and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is steadily increasing worldwide, reaching epidemic proportions. While the impact of obesity in children with CKD is less pronounced than in adults, recent studies suggest a similar trend in the child population.

Stenosis not infrequently preludes to thrombotic events with the loss of AVF functionality. A functioning AVF, when listened by a stethoscope, has a continuous systolic-diastolic low-frequency murmur, while with stenosis, the frequency of the murmur increases and the duration of diastolic component decreases, disappearing in severe stenosis.

Methods: We performed a pilot, observational study to explore the possible relationships between the self-reported level of physical activity (IPAQ) and the severity of mood disturbances (BDI score) in a cohort of 58 ESKD patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (HD; = 30) or peritoneal dialysis (PD; = 28).
Results: Overall, ESKD patients were severely inactive (median METs: 590 [460-1850]) and the intensity of overall and walking physical activity was mostly low to moderate.
Background: Despite patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (HD) being notoriously prone to adverse cardiovascular (CV) events, risk prediction in this population remains challenging. miRNA 122-5p, a short, non-coding RNA predominantly involved in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, has recently been related to the onset and progression of CV disease.
Methods: We run a pilot, multicenter, longitudinal, observational study to evaluate the clinical significance and prognostic usefulness of circulating miRNA 122-5p in a multicentric cohort of 74 individuals on maintenance HD.

Aim: Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists reduce albuminuria and the risk of kidney failure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of both agents alone and in combination on markers of the glomerular endothelial glycocalyx and tubular function.
Methods: This post-hoc analysis utilized data of the ROTATE-3 study, a randomized cross-over study in 46 adults with chronic kidney disease and urinary albumin excretion ≥100 mg/24 h, who were treated for 4 weeks with dapagliflozin, eplerenone or its combination.
: The global prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is on the rise, posing important challenges for healthcare systems. Thus, the search for new factors potentially involved in the pathogenesis, progression and complications of early CKD remains urgent. Marinobufagenin (MBG) is a natriuretic endogenous cardiotonic steroid, and increased circulating levels of it may accelerate kidney damage.
