Some of the most fundamental chemical building blocks of life on Earth are the metal elements. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is an element-specific technique that can analyse the local atomic and electronic structure of, for example, the active sites in catalysts and energy materials and allow the metal sites in biological samples to be identified and understood. A microfluidic device capable of withstanding the intense hard X-ray beams of a 4th generation synchrotron and harsh chemical sample conditions is presented in this work.

Wound healing is an urgent problem that impacts quality of life, and the need for biomaterials suitable for the treatment of skin wound healing disease is increasing annually. Innovative biomaterials and treatments for skin abrasions are being relentlessly researched and established in order to improve treatment efficacy. Here, we describe a novel electrospun polymeric nanofibrous scaffold enriched with pharmaceutical bioactive materials extracted from(MC), which demonstrated efficient skin wound healing therapy due to its excellent human skin keratinocyte proliferation and adhesion inanalysis.

Pre-treatment CT imaging in stage IIIA lung cancer: Can we predict local recurrence after definitive chemoradiotherapy?

Objectives: The aim of this study was to delineate computed tomography (CT) features of stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancers on pre-treatment staging studies and identify features that could predict local recurrence after definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed pre- and post-treatment CT scans for 91 patients with Stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer undergoing definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Pre-treatment CT qualitative features were evaluated by consensus.

Many algorithms will suggest ultrasound (US) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as the first-line imaging choice in pregnant women with abdominal pain due to the lack of ionizing radiation. However, these studies can have limitations as well.

Ovarian dermoid cyst complicated by small bowel obstruction, entero-ovarian fistula formation, and malignant degeneration.

Dermoid cysts, or mature cystic teratomas, are complicated by malignant degeneration in only 1-2% of cases. Rarely, dermoid cysts result in complications of small bowel obstruction or entero-ovarian fistula formation. In the current report we present the case of a 59-year-old female with a known dermoid cyst who presented with leukocytosis and was discovered to have a small bowel obstruction at the level of an ileo-ovarian fistula.

Computed tomography features of local pleural recurrence in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma treated with intensity-modulated pleural radiation therapy.

Objective: This study was conducted in order to describe the computed tomography (CT) features of local pleural recurrence in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma undergoing intensity-modulated pleural radiation therapy (IMPRINT) as part of multimodality treatment.

Methods: In this observational study, 58 patients treated with IMPRINT between September 21, 2004, and December 1, 2014 were included. Baseline and follow-up CT scans were qualitatively assessed.

Within gastrointestinal malignancies, primary hepatocellular carcinoma and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) are frequently associated with visceral thromboses (VT). Thrombus formation in the portal (PVT), mesenteric (MVT), or splenic vein (SVT) system leads to portal hypertension and intestinal ischemia. VT in PDAC may convey a risk of increased distal thrombosis and poses therapeutic uncertainty regarding the role of anticoagulation.
