An exhibition on STDs and AIDS, animated constantly by specially trained professionals, was organized in a school for apprentices (6500 pupils). Its purposes: to help youngsters make more personal and responsible decisions about their sexual lives; to reinforce their knowledges on STDs and AIDS transmission and prevention; modify their attitudes and behavior in the field of contraception (discussions with partner, use of condoms). The impact of this exhibition will be measured scientifically.

Thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) readily crosses the placenta and stimulates the fetal pituitary. We studied the response of the maternal and fetal pituitary-thyroid axes to TRH and the influence of prenatal exposure to TRH on the physiological postnatal increase in thyrotropin (TSH) and triiodothyronine (T3) in the neonate. Twenty-six pregnant women received TRH (400 or 600 micrograms) intravenous or saline (controls) either 2 or 12 h before elective cesarean section at term.

A pilot health school programme has been set up on an experimental way since January 1984 in a few professional and high schools of the Canton of Vaud. The paper presents the methodological tools that will allow an evaluation of various aspects of this experience, which has lasted for three years. The process will be evaluated among three populations: the pupils, the teachers and the members of the health team.

The cases of 73 patients undergoing valvulotomy for congenital valvular aortic stenosis between 1957 and 1982 were reviewed. Data was updated after recalling patients to the outpatient clinic and/or analysis of the results of a questionnaire sent to the patient's family doctor or cardiologist. Babies less than 12 months old at the time of surgery were excluded from the study.

To meet the health needs of adolescents 16 to 19, two Swiss cantons have largely modified their school health systems: this paper describes two programs located in the French speaking part of Switzerland that include both screening and educational activities. These activities are run on an collective and individual basis by specially trained nurses and physicians. Three conditions appear essential for the effectiveness of such programs: priorities should be derived from the needs as expressed by the adolescents themselves.

The traditional activities of screening are the prerogative of the school health professionals. Nonetheless health education should be approached in an interdisciplinary fashion and involve the form teachers as well as the specialized area teachers. This article describes a program of health education which is about to be organized in the canton of Vaud.
