Introduction: Pharmacological cognitive enhancement (PCE) among healthy individuals with off-label use of medications raises ethical and safety concerns in academia. Among the few studies that have examined this phenomenon in medical students, the desire to improve performance and cope with high levels of stress are the most common associated factors implicated. Our main objective was to update current literature by exploring a novel factor by investigating the association between PCE use and student learning approaches among a cohort of international medical students.

Context: The analysis of the changes in the electronic structure along intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) paths for model reactions: (i) ethylene + butadiene cycloaddition, (ii) prototype SN2 reaction Cl + CH3Cl, (iii) HCN/CNH isomerization assisted by water, (iv) CO + HF → C(O)HF was performed, in terms of changes in the deformation density (Δr) and the deformation of MEP (ΔMEP). The main goal was to further examine the utility of the ΔMEP as a descriptor of chemical bonding, and to compare the pictures resulting from Δr and ΔMEP. Both approaches clearly show that the main changes in the electronic structure occur in the TS region.

Context: The interpretation of ETS-NOCV for typical covalent and dative-covalent chemical bonds is presented and compared with that for halogen bonds. Possible tuning of the strength of halogen bonding is considered, first by applying an electric field (modeled by the point charges or the electric field vector), and then by constructing a model transition-metal complex with enhanced strength of halogen bonding. For all the systems, the ETS-NOCV picture is supplemented by the analysis of the deformation in molecular electrostatic potential (ΔMEP).

Agriculture's global environmental impacts are widely expected to continue expanding, driven by population and economic growth and dietary changes. This Review highlights climate change as an additional amplifier of agriculture's environmental impacts, by reducing agricultural productivity, reducing the efficacy of agrochemicals, increasing soil erosion, accelerating the growth and expanding the range of crop diseases and pests, and increasing land clearing. We identify multiple pathways through which climate change intensifies agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, creating a potentially powerful climate change-reinforcing feedback loop.

Childhood obesity, with its metabolic complications, is a problem of public health. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has recommended glucose levels 1 h post oral glucose load (1h-PG) > 155-209 mg/dL as diagnostic for intermediate hyperglycemia (IH), while >209 mg/dL for type 2 diabetes (T2D). The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence of prediabetes, IH, and T2D in children and adolescents with simple obesity according to the criteria of American Diabetes Association (ADA) and of IDF, and the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on these disorders.

  • This study assessed the effectiveness of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) in adults with insulin-dependent diabetes due to Wolfram syndrome (WFS) compared to those with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
  • Ten adults with WFS were monitored over 14 days and showed significantly lower average glucose levels and glycemic variability than 30 matched T1D patients.
  • Results indicated that WFS patients experienced less time in high-range hyperglycemia and had more stable blood sugar levels overall, suggesting different glycemic control dynamics in WFS compared to T1D.

Background: While insulin pumps remain the most common form of therapy for youths with type 1 diabetes (T1DM), they differ in the extent to which they utilize data from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and automate insulin delivery.

Methods: The aim of the study was to compare metabolic control in patients using different models of insulin pumps. This retrospective single-center study randomly sampled 30 patients for each of the following treatments: Medtronic 720G without PLGS (predictive low glucose suspend), Medtronic 640G or 740G with PLGS and Medtronic 780G.

Despite abundant evidence of functional networks in the human brain, their neuronal underpinnings, and relationships to real-time behavior have been challenging to resolve. Analyzing brain-wide intracranial-EEG recordings with video monitoring, acquired in awake subjects during clinical epilepsy evaluation, we discovered the tendency of each brain region to switch back and forth between 2 distinct power spectral densities (PSDs 2-55Hz). We further recognized that this 'spectral switching' occurs synchronously between distant sites, even between regions with differing baseline PSDs, revealing long-range functional networks that would be obscured in analysis of individual frequency bands.

Citral, a common monoterpene found in numerous plants, is an interesting compound that has been shown to have various biological activities. Although it is widely distributed in nature and there are many studies presenting its biological activities, its anti-neurodegenerative activity, especially under in vivo conditions, is very poorly understood. Thus, this paper aimed to deepen knowledge about citral activity towards factors and symptoms of neurodegeneration.

TetR family regulators (TFRs) represent a large group of one-component bacterial signal transduction systems which recognize environmental signals, like the presence of antibiotics or other bactericidal compounds, and trigger the cell response by regulating the expression of genes that secure bacterial survival in harsh environmental conditions. TFRs act as homodimers, each protomer is composed of a conserved DNA-binding N-terminal domain (NTD) and a variable ligand-binding C-terminal domain (CTD). Currently, there are about 500 structures of TFRs available in the Protein Data Bank and one-fourth of them represent the structures of TFR-ligand complexes.

Platelet concentrates such as platelet-rich plasma, platelet-rich fibrin or concentrated growth factors are cost-effective autologous preparations containing various growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor, transforming growth factor β, insulin-like growth factor 1 and vascular endothelial growth factor. For this reason, they are often used in regenerative medicine to treat wounds, nerve damage as well as cartilage and bone defects. Unfortunately, after administration, these preparations release growth factors very quickly, which lose their activity rapidly.

Unlabelled: Conservation breeding programs are increasingly used as recovery actions for wild animals; bringing founders into captivity to rear captive populations for future reintroduction into the wild. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature recommends that founders should come from genetically close populations and should have sufficient genetic diversity to avoid mating among relatives. Genomic data are highly informative for evaluating founders due to their high resolution and ability to capture adaptive divergence, yet, their application in that context remains limited.
