Quercetin, a bioactive plant flavonoid, is an antioxidant, and as such it exhibits numerous beneficial properties including anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antibacterial and antiviral activity. It occurs naturally in fruit and vegetables such as apples, blueberries, cranberries, lettuce, and is present in plant waste such as onion peel or grape pomace which constitute good sources of quercetin for technological or pharmaceutical purposes. The presented study focuses on the role of quercetin in prevention and treatment of dermatological diseases analyzing its effect at a molecular level, its signal transduction and metabolism.

This paper presents the results of beam investigations on semiconductor IR lasers using novel detectors based on thermocouples. The work covers the design, the fabrication of detectors, and the experimental validation of their sensitivity to IR radiation. The principle of operation of the manufactured detectors is based on the Seebeck effect (the temperature difference between hot and cold junctions induced voltage appearance).

The use of scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) to investigate silicon nanowires (SiNWs) is presented. SThM allows imaging of temperature distribution at the nanoscale, while KPFM images the potential distribution with AFM-related ultra-high spatial resolution. Both techniques are therefore suitable for imaging the resistance distribution.

Monitoring of biotechnological processes, including fermentation is extremely important because of the rapidly occurring changes in the composition of the samples during the production. In the case of beer, the analysis of physicochemical parameters allows for the determination of the stage of fermentation process and the control of its possible perturbations. As a tool to control the beer production process a sensor array can be used, composed of potentiometric and voltammetric sensors (so-called hybrid Electronic Tongue, h-ET).

The backside contact, silicon-based transducers with vacuum-deposited gold layer (BSC) are evaluated as the base for electrochemical biosensors construction. Their comparison with commercially available transducers with screen printed gold and traditional gold disc electrode is reported. To determine the advantages and disadvantages of each of gold surfaces mentioned above, the 6-(ferrocenyl)-hexanethiol was used as the indicator.

Tremendous progress of microelectronic technology observed within last 40 years is closely related to even more remarkable progress of technological tools. It is important to note however, that these new tools may be used for fabrication of diverse multifunctional structures as well. Such devices, called MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System) and MOEMS (Micro-Electro-Opto-Mechanical-System) integrate microelectronic and micromechanical structures in one system enabling interdisciplinary application, with most interesting and prospective being bio-medical investigations.
