Hip Fracture Incidence Over Twenty Years in Poland: The HiPoL Study.

Introduction: In the previous report, we noted a significant increase in hip fracture incidence in the local study area. The aim of the study was the continuous observation of hip fracture incidence in the local community over the last 20 years and to estimate their projection for the next 30 years.

Methods: Medical records of the patients aged 50 years and older in the period 2002 - 2021 (local data - area of the district Tarnowskie Góry and the city of Piekary Śląskie) with diagnosis ICD-10: S72.

Demonstrating Agreement between Radio and Fluorescence Measurements of the Depth of Maximum of Extensive Air Showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory.

We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum (X_{max}) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X_{max} resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X_{max} measurements with even a sparse radio array.

Limits to Gauge Coupling in the Dark Sector Set by the Nonobservation of Instanton-Induced Decay of Super-Heavy Dark Matter in the Pierre Auger Observatory Data.

Instantons, which are nonperturbative solutions to Yang-Mills equations, provide a signal for the occurrence of quantum tunneling between distinct classes of vacua. They can give rise to decays of particles otherwise forbidden. Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory, we search for signatures of such instanton-induced processes that would be suggestive of super-heavy particles decaying in the Galactic halo.

Targeted metabolomics analysis of serum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigen-stimulated blood cultures of pediatric patients with active and latent tuberculosis.

Profound tuberculosis (TB)-induced metabolic changes reflected in the blood metabolomic profile may provide an opportunity to identify specific markers of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Using targeted liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, we compared the levels of 30 small metabolites, including amino acids and derivatives, and small organic compounds in serum and M.tb antigen-stimulated whole blood cultures of active TB children, latent TB (LTBI) children, nonmycobacterial pneumonia (NMP) children, and healthy controls (HCs) to assess their potential as biomarkers of childhood TB.

Characterization of Biomarkers in Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases as a Prognostic Tool.

Background: Unfortunately, the majority of patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM) experience disease recurrence following hepatic surgery. The key challenge is therefore optimal patient selection, which currently relies on anatomical and clinical parameters. Exploring a potential molecular signature may be predictive for seeing a clinical benefit from CRCLM resection.

Measurement of the Fluctuations in the Number of Muons in Extensive Air Showers with the Pierre Auger Observatory.

We present the first measurement of the fluctuations in the number of muons in extensive air showers produced by ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. We find that the measured fluctuations are in good agreement with predictions from air shower simulations. This observation provides new insights into the origin of the previously reported deficit of muons in air shower simulations and constrains models of hadronic interactions at ultrahigh energies.

Effect of Weed Management on the Parasitoid Community in Mediterranean Vineyards.

Enriching agroecosystems with non-crop vegetation is a popular strategy for conservation biocontrol. In vineyards, the effects of specific seeded or planted cover crops on natural enemies are well-studied, whereas conserving spontaneously developing weeds received less attention. We compared parasitoid communities between matched pairs of vineyard plots in northern Israel, differing in weed management practices: "herbicide", repeated herbicide applications vs.

Forficula auricularia (Dermaptera) in orchards: Monitoring seasonal activity, the effect of pesticides, and the perception of European fruit growers on its role as a predator or pest.

Background: We investigated several aspects that could affect the role of the European earwig (Forficula auricularia) as a generalist predator in orchards: (i) seasonal activity in apple orchards, (ii) effectiveness of two cardboard trap types (roll vs tape) to enhance earwig densities, (iii) the effect of pesticides (chlorpyrifos-methyl, spinosad, indoxacarb, spirotetramat, pirimicarb, sulphur, fluopyram tebuconazole) on earwig survival and behaviour, and (iv) the perception of European fruit growers of the earwigs' role as a predator or pest.

Results: The highest activity of earwigs in apple trees was observed in summer. Roll traps were a more effective capture method than tape traps.

Many organizations in Europe collect data and perform research on municipal solid waste and the secondary raw materials that can be produced from them through recycling, urban mining, or landfill mining. However, the information generated and presented thereby is often highly aggregated, while research activities are many a time isolated. Both reduce the usability of the data and information generated.

Correlation between tumour biology status measured in triple-tracer 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-18F-fluorothymidine- 18F-fluoromisonidazole-PET/CT study and human papillomavirus status in patients with head and neck cancer.

Objective: Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been usually associated with gynaecological cancers; however, recent studies have shown that this virus plays an important role in head and neck cancer. The aim of this study was to correlate PET/CT parameters in HPV-positive (HPV) and HPV-negative (HPV) patients using three tracers showing glucose metabolism, proliferation and hypoxia.

Patients And Methods: Thirty-six patients (10 females and 26 males) with newly diagnosed head and neck cancer were enroled to this retrospective study.

Safety of New Oral Anticoagulants for Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.

In daily practice, chemical substances called "direct oral anticoagulants" or DOACs are more convenient to administer when set beside vitamin K antagonists (VKA) due to improved pharmacologic properties, fewer drug interactions and rapid onset of action. The objective of this review was to assess whether DOACs are the alternative for VKA in subjects with mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD). An analysis of current DOAC trials and studies was performed focusing on subjects with CKD.

Cough modulation by upper airway stimuli in cat - potential clinical application?

The modulation of mechanically induced tracheobronchial cough was tested by applying various stimuli and the elicitation of other airway protective behaviors in pentobarbital anesthetized cats. Capsaicin and histamine were injected in the nose, and mechanical nylon fiber and / or air puff stimulation was applied to the nose and nasopharynx. Reflex responses of cough, sneeze, aspiration reflex and expiration reflex were induced mechanically.

Sizes of particles formed during municipal wastewater treatment.

Volumetric diameters Dv and specific surface area SpS of sludge particles formed during chemical coagulation and electrocoagulation of sewage were determined. The obtained aggregate-flocs differed substantially in both Dv and SpS values. The differences in Dv and SpS values of the analyzed particles were interpreted based on theoretical models for expanding aggregates.

Jet energy measurement and its systematic uncertainty in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV with the ATLAS detector.

The jet energy scale (JES) and its systematic uncertainty are determined for jets measured with the ATLAS detector using proton-proton collision data with a centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]. Jets are reconstructed from energy deposits forming topological clusters of calorimeter cells using the anti-[Formula: see text] algorithm with distance parameters [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text], and are calibrated using MC simulations. A residual JES correction is applied to account for differences between data and MC simulations.

Search for dark matter in events with a hadronically decaying W or Z boson and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector.

A search is presented for dark matter pair production in association with a W or Z boson in pp collisions representing 20.3  fb(-1) of integrated luminosity at √s=8  TeV using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with a hadronic jet with the jet mass consistent with a W or Z boson, and with large missing transverse momentum are analyzed.

Measurement of top quark polarization in top-antitop events from proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector.

This Letter presents measurements of the polarization of the top quark in top-antitop quark pair events, using 4.7  fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at √s=7  TeV. Final states containing one or two isolated leptons (electrons or muons) and jets are considered.

Muon reconstruction efficiency and momentum resolution of the ATLAS experiment in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV in 2010.

This paper presents a study of the performance of the muon reconstruction in the analysis of proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV at the LHC, recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2010. This performance is described in terms of reconstruction and isolation efficiencies and momentum resolutions for different classes of reconstructed muons. The results are obtained from an analysis of [Formula: see text] meson and [Formula: see text] boson decays to dimuons, reconstructed from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 40 pb[Formula: see text].

The differential production cross section of the [Formula: see text](1020) meson in [Formula: see text] = 7 TeV [Formula: see text] collisions measured with the ATLAS detector.

Measurement of the azimuthal angle dependence of inclusive jet yields in Pb+Pb collisions at √(sNN)=2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector.

Measurements of the variation of inclusive jet suppression as a function of relative azimuthal angle, Δφ, with respect to the elliptic event plane provide insight into the path-length dependence of jet quenching. ATLAS has measured the Δφ dependence of jet yields in 0.14 nb(-1) of √(s(NN))=2.

EGFR activating mutations detected by different PCR techniques in Caucasian NSCLC patients with CNS metastases: short report.

EGFR mutation testing has become an essential determination to decide treatment options for NSCLC. The mutation analysis is often conducted in samples with low percentage of tumour cells from primary tumour biopsies. There is very little evidence that samples from metastatic tissues are suitable for EGFR testing.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lower eyelid penetrating into the orbit - case report.

The aim of our study is to report a case of pigmented squamous cell carcinoma of the palpebral conjunctiva referred to our clinic because of eye pain. A 86 year old patient suffering from eye pain due to a lower right eyelid tumour was admitted to our department. The basic ophthalmic examination and CT scans of orbits were performed.

Observation of associated near-side and away-side long-range correlations in sqrt[s(NN)]=5.02 TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector.

Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (Δø) and pseudorapidity (Δη) are measured in sqrt[s(NN)] = 5.02 TeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Measurement of Z boson production in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector.

The ATLAS experiment has observed 1995 Z boson candidates in data corresponding to 0.15  nb(-1) of integrated luminosity obtained in the 2011 LHC Pb+Pb run at sqrt[s(NN)]=2.76  TeV.
