Transfer learning (TL) techniques have proven useful in a wide variety of applications traditionally dominated by machine learning (ML), such as natural language processing, computer vision, and computer-aided design. Recent extrapolations of TL to the radio frequency (RF) domain are being used to increase the potential applicability of RFML algorithms, seeking to improve the portability of models for spectrum situational awareness and transmission source identification. Unlike most of the computer vision and natural language processing applications of TL, applications within the RF modality must contend with inherent hardware distortions and channel condition variations.

  • The HeartMate 3 (HM3) is the only fully magnetically levitated left ventricular assist device (LVAD) available for advanced heart failure patients, but its impact on heart function post-implantation hasn't been fully explored.
  • A study comparing HM3 to older LVADs (HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device and HeartMate II) found no significant differences in heart function improvements after implantation.
  • The proportion of patients showing significant reverse heart remodeling was similar across all devices, indicating that HM3 technology may be just as effective as older models in supporting heart recovery.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer cells need more energy (ATP) to grow and survive, which can change how they take in and balance sodium ions in their bodies.
  • The researchers used special methods to measure sodium levels and how fast cancer cells convert sugar into energy, comparing cancer cells to normal cells to see the differences.
  • They found that when they blocked a specific pump that controls sodium balance (Na/K-ATPase), the cancer cells had more sodium and produced less energy, showing that sodium levels affect their energy production.

Past year, month, and lifetime adolescent e-cigarette use rates remain persistently high, despite falling cigarette use rates. Previous investigations have noted a strong relationship between an individual's positive and negative cognitions related to a behavior, and subsequent initiation of that behavior. This investigation was conducted to determine the impact positive and negative explicit and implicit cigarette-related cognitions may have on the use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes among at-risk, cigarette-naive adolescents.

The timely delivery of critical messages in real-time environments is an increasing requirement for industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks. Similar to wired time-sensitive networking (TSN) techniques, which bifurcate traffic flows based on priority, the proposed wireless method aims to ensure that critical traffic arrives rapidly across multiple hops to enable numerous IIoT use cases. IIoT architectures are migrating toward wirelessly connected edges, creating a desire to extend TSN-like functionality to a wireless format.

The phospholipid and free fatty acid (FFA) composition of neuronal membranes plays a crucial role in learning and memory, but the mechanisms through which neuronal activity affects the brain's lipid landscape remain largely unexplored. The levels of saturated FFAs, particularly of myristic acid (C14:0), strongly increase during neuronal stimulation and memory acquisition, suggesting the involvement of phospholipase A1 (PLA1) activity in synaptic plasticity. Here, we show that genetic ablation of the PLA1 isoform DDHD2 in mice dramatically reduces saturated FFA responses to memory acquisition across the brain.

Viruses induce a wide range of neurological sequelae through the dysfunction and death of infected cells and persistent inflammation in the brain. Neural stem cells (NSCs) are often disturbed during viral infections. Although some viruses directly infect and kill NSCs, the antiviral immune response may also indirectly affect NSCs.

Background: Methadone, a cornerstone of opioid use disorder treatments for many decades, is an essential tool for combatting the opioid epidemic. However, requirements for observing methadone dosing in person through direct observed therapy (DOT) impose significant barriers for many patients. Digital technology can facilitate remote DOT, which could reduce barriers to methadone treatment.

Objective: Effective postoperative tracheostomy management after free flap surgery is critical but can offer challenges including difficulty with humidification delivery and contraindications toward neck instrumentation. The purpose of this project was to establish a multidisciplinary team and implement the AIRVO™ tracheostomy humidification system for those undergoing free flap surgery and determine its effect on respiratory secretions and related events.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of head and neck free flap surgery patients prior to implementation of AIRVO™ (Jan 2021-May 2021) and after (August 2021-December 2021) were analyzed with a 2 month (June 2021-July 2021) implementation phase.

Convergent adaptation to the same environment by multiple lineages frequently involves rapid evolutionary change at the same genes, implicating these genes as important for environmental adaptation. Such adaptive molecular changes may yield either change or loss of protein function; loss of function can eliminate newly deleterious proteins or reduce energy necessary for protein production. We previously found a striking case of recurrent pseudogenization of the Paraoxonase 1 (Pon1) gene among aquatic mammal lineages-Pon1 became a pseudogene with genetic lesions, such as stop codons and frameshifts, at least four times independently in aquatic and semiaquatic mammals.

In the past, when scientists encountered and studied 'new' environmental phenomena, they rarely considered the existing knowledge of First Peoples (also known as Indigenous or Aboriginal people). The scientific debate over the regularly spaced bare patches (so-called fairy circles) in arid grasslands of Australian deserts is a case in point. Previous researchers used remote sensing, numerical modelling, aerial images and field observations to propose that fairy circles arise from plant self-organization.

Background: Federal and state regulations require frequent direct observation of methadone ingestion at an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP)-a requirement that creates barriers to patient access. Video observed therapy (VOT) may help to address public health and safety concerns of providing take-home medications while simultaneously reducing barriers to treatment access and long-term retention. Evaluating user experiences with VOT is important for understanding the acceptability of this strategy.

Purpose: Exercise cardiac rehabilitation (CR) represents an evidence-based therapy for patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and this article provides a concise review of the relevant exercise testing and CR literature, including aspects unique to their care.

Clinical Considerations: A hallmark feature of HFrEF is exercise intolerance (eg, early-onset fatigue). Drug therapies for HFrEF target neurohormonal pathways to blunt negative remodeling of the cardiac architecture and restore favorable loading conditions.

Transfer learning is a pervasive technology in computer vision and natural language processing fields, yielding exponential performance improvements by leveraging prior knowledge gained from data with different distributions. However, while recent works seek to mature machine learning and deep learning techniques in applications related to wireless communications, a field loosely termed radio frequency machine learning, few have demonstrated the use of transfer learning techniques for yielding performance gains, improved generalization, or to address concerns of training data costs. With modifications to existing transfer learning taxonomies constructed to support transfer learning in other modalities, this paper presents a tailored taxonomy for radio frequency applications, yielding a consistent framework that can be used to compare and contrast existing and future works.

Following infection or immunization, memory B cells (MBCs) and long-lived plasma cells provide humoral immunity that can last for decades. Most principles of MBC biology have been determined with hapten-protein carrier models or fluorescent protein immunizations. Here, we examine the temporal dynamics of the germinal center (GC) B cell and MBC response following mouse influenza A virus infection.

Selection of a localization method for nonpalpable breast lesions offers an opportunity for institutions to seek multidisciplinary input to promote value-based, patient-centered care. The diverse range of nonpalpable breast and axillary pathologies identified through increased utilization of screening mammography often necessitates image-guided preoperative localization for accurate lesion identification and excision. Preoperative localization techniques for breast and axillary lesions have evolved to include both wire and nonwire methods, the latter of which include radioactive seeds, radar reflectors, magnetic seeds, and radiofrequency identification tag localizers.

Viruses that infect the central nervous system (CNS) are associated with developmental abnormalities as well as neuropsychiatric and degenerative conditions. Many of these viruses such as Zika virus (ZIKV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and herpes simplex virus (HSV) demonstrate tropism for neural stem cells (NSCs). NSCs are the multipotent progenitor cells of the brain that have the ability to form neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes.

This paper models a translation for base-2 pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) to mixed-radix uses such as card shuffling. In particular, we explore a shuffler algorithm that relies on a sequence of uniformly distributed random inputs from a mixed-radix domain to implement a Fisher-Yates shuffle that calls for inputs from a base-2 PRNG. Entropy is lost through this mixed-radix conversion, which is assumed to be surjective mapping from a relatively large domain of size 2J to a set of arbitrary size .

Article Synopsis
  • - Bariatric surgery (BS) is safe for carefully selected patients with compensated cirrhosis, but there's limited data on how different BS types affect outcomes and healthcare use.
  • - This study analyzed data from 3032 obese adults with compensated cirrhosis who underwent either Roux-en-Y (RYGB) or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), finding no significant differences in complications or decompensation rates between the two surgeries.
  • - RYGB resulted in higher healthcare utilization in terms of hospital stay length, readmission rates, and costs compared to LSG, suggesting that LSG may be a better option for these patients, but further research is needed to confirm these findings.
