Organophosphate neuroactive agents represent severe security threats in various scenarios, including military conflicts, terrorist activities and industrial accidents. Addressing these threats necessitates effective protective measures, with a focus on decontamination strategies. Adsorbents such as bentonite have been explored as a preliminary method for chemical warfare agent immobilization, albeit lacking chemical destruction capabilities.

Herein, we present the preparation of a series of electronically and/or sterically distinct borenium-type species based on a simple 2-arylpyridine scaffold. Corresponding arylpyridine was firstly subjected to electrophilic borylation (BBr/i-PrNEt) and formed BBr chelate was reduced with LiAlH to yield arylpyridine boron dihydride. Elimination of one hydride led to Lewis acidic borenium-like products.

A set of substituted 1,4,7-triazacyclononane ligands was synthesised, including a wide series of novel derivatives bearing a thiazole or thiophene side group, with the potential to incorporate these derivatives into a polymeric material; some previously known/studied ligands were also synthesised for comparative purposes. The corresponding copper(II) complexes were prepared, and their ability to mediate the hydrolysis of phosphate ester bonds was studied via UV-Vis spectrophotometry, using bis(-nitrophenyl)phosphate as a model substrate. Some of the prepared complexes showed a considerable enhancement of the phosphate ester hydrolysis in comparison with previously studied systems, which makes them some of the most effective complexes ever tested for this purpose.
