Article Synopsis
  • Innovative microfluidic technology was combined with a 100 kHz 2D infrared spectrometer to analyze the sensitivity of cyanate ions (OCN) to different solvent environments.
  • By conducting high-throughput 2D IR spectroscopy, researchers measured vibrational changes in cyanate as solvents were mixed, noting frequency shifts that indicate solvent interactions.
  • The results showed that cyanate does not preferentially solvate in specific environments; rather, its behavior is influenced by a more complicated interplay of local solvents.

An innovative fabrication method is presented that affords the combination of polydimethyl-siloxane (PDMS) microfluidic technology with vibrational spectroscopy. PDMS devices are produced with uniform thicknesses ranging from 25 to 400 μm. The optical characteristics of the microfluidic devices in the mid-infrared are reported.
