Three-dimensional (3D) printing promises a revolution in laboratory creativity by enabling rapid prototyping, broader availability of scientific apparatuses, and transformative scientific workflows. We believe all chemistry and biology laboratories should equip themselves with one or more 3D printers and a critical mass of scientists trained to operate them. This overview surveys the techniques, intricacies, and pitfalls associated with 3D printing of functional parts, including measurements, computer-aided design, slicing, limitations of 3D printing, troubleshooting, tips for tricky filaments, and 3D printer maintenance.

Clean pump oil is critical to the performance and longevity of oil-sealed vacuum pumps. Cold traps charged with cryogens can protect pump oil from solvent contamination but are subject to operator error. Notably, cold traps with evaporated or warmed cryogens do not protect the vacuum pump.

Article Synopsis
  • Loss of appetite, also known as anorexia, is a common issue in cancer patients, impacting up to 70% of those with advanced cancer, making treatment challenging for healthcare providers.
  • A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture and moxibustion as treatments for cancer-related anorexia, but findings indicate that the evidence is inconclusive.
  • While acupuncture has shown promise for other cancer-related symptoms, such as nausea, more high-quality, large-scale studies are required to determine its effectiveness for appetite loss in cancer patients.

Acupuncture intervention in actual practice is rarely reported and may be different from that applied in acupuncture research. To review acupuncture practice in an integrative medicine clinic and characterize the association between targeted symptoms, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis, and acupoint selection. We reviewed outpatient acupuncture records from March 2016 to April 2018.

In continuous flow biocatalysis, chemical transformations can occur under milder, greener, more scalable, and safer conditions than conventional organic synthesis. However, the method typically involves extensive screening to optimize each enzyme's immobilization on its solid support material. The task of weighing solids for large numbers of experiments poses a bottleneck for screening enzyme immobilization conditions.

Background: Acupuncture is a recognized integrative modality for managing hot flashes. However, data regarding predictors for response to acupuncture in cancer patients experiencing hot flashes are limited. We explored associations between patient characteristics, including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis, and treatment response among cancer patients who received acupuncture for management of hot flashes.

Increased access to complementary therapies such as acupuncture at academic medical centers has created new opportunities for management of cancer and cancer treatment related symptoms. Patients presenting for acupuncture treatment during calendar year 2016 at an outpatient integrative medicine clinic in a comprehensive cancer center were asked to complete a modified Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS; 16 symptoms, score 0-10, 10 worst possible) before and after each visit. ESAS subscales analyzed included global (GDS; score 0-90), physical (PHS, 0-60) and psychological distress (PSS, 0-20).

GPR55, a G protein-coupled receptor, is an attractive target to alleviate inflammatory and neuropathic pain and treat osteoporosis and cancer. Identifying a potent and selective ligand will aid to further establish the specific physiological roles and pharmacology of the receptor. Towards this goal, a targeted library of 22 compounds was synthesized in a modular fashion to obtain structure-activity relationship information.

Background: Use of complementary and integrative therapies is increasing among cancer patients, but data regarding the impact treatments such as acupuncture have in an inpatient oncology setting are limited.

Methods: Patients who received acupuncture in an inpatient hospital environment between December 2014 and December 2015 were asked to complete a modified Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS; 0-10 scale) before and after each visit. Pre- and post-treatment scores were examined for each symptom using paired t tests.

Hot flashes (HFs) are a common side effect of cancer treatment. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate evidence related to the use of acupuncture for HFs in cancer patients. EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane (all databases), PubMed, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Scopus were searched from their inception through December 2014.

In a previous systematic review of the worldwide literature of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving needle insertion into acupuncture points for symptom management in cancer patients, we identified only one high-quality RCT that was deemed to have a low risk of bias. Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane (all databases), Scopus, and PubMed were searched from inception through December 2011 with no language limits applied. A total of 41 RCTs met all inclusion criteria and were rated.

This article discusses the mechanisms of aging, future areas of exploration, and strategies to achieve successful aging given the current state of medical knowledge. The article begins with mitochondrial function and cell growth and decline, then presents aspects over which humans have control over their health: nutrition, use of nutritional supplementation, body posture, exercise, lifestyle choices, and use of traditional Chinese medicine. The discussion concludes with the role of the physician in offering patient education regarding behaviors for a healthy life.
