Quantitative analysis of trabecular bone tissue cryosections via a fully automated neural network-based approach.

Cryosectioning is known as a common and well-established histological method, due to its easy accessibility, speed, and cost efficiency. However, the creation of bone cryosections is especially difficult. In this study, a cryosectioning protocol for trabecular bone that offers a relatively cheap and undemanding alternative to paraffin or resin embedded sectioning was developed.

Supercongruences involving Domb numbers and binary quadratic forms.

In this paper, we prove two recently conjectured supercongruences (modulo , where is any prime greater than 3) of Zhi-Hong Sun on truncated sums involving the Domb numbers. Our proofs involve a number of ingredients such as congruences involving specialized Bernoulli polynomials, harmonic numbers, binomial coefficients, and hypergeometric summations and transformations.

On the infinite Borwein product raised to a positive real power.

In this paper, we study properties of the coefficients appearing in the -series expansion of , the infinite Borwein product for an arbitrary prime , raised to an arbitrary positive real power . We use the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher circle method to give an asymptotic formula for the coefficients. For we give an estimate of their growth which enables us to partially confirm an earlier conjecture of the first author concerning an observed sign pattern of the coefficients when the exponent is within a specified range of positive real numbers.

New -Analogues of Van Hamme's (E.2) Supercongruence and of a Supercongruence by Swisher.

In this paper, a couple of -supercongruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series are proved, most of them modulo the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial. One of these results is a new -analogue of the (E.2) supercongruence by Van Hamme, another one is a new -analogue of a supercongruence by Swisher, while the other results are closely related -supercongruences.

Islet Autoantibody Standardization Program: interlaboratory comparison of insulin autoantibody assay performance in 2018 and 2020 workshops.

Aims/hypothesis: The Islet Autoantibody Standardization Program (IASP) aims to improve the performance of immunoassays measuring autoantibodies in type 1 diabetes and the concordance of results across laboratories. IASP organises international workshops distributing anonymised serum samples to participating laboratories and centralises the collection and analysis of results. In this report, we describe the results of assays measuring IAA submitted to the IASP 2018 and 2020 workshops.

Three families of -supercongruences modulo the square and cube of a cyclotomic polynomial.

In this paper, three parametric -supercongruences for truncated very-well-poised basic hypergeometric series are proved, one of them modulo the square, the other two modulo the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial. The main ingredients of proof include a basic hypergeometric summation by George Gasper, the method of creative microscoping (a method recently introduced by the first author in collaboration with Wadim Zudilin), and the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials.

Some -supercongruences modulo the square and cube of a cyclotomic polynomial.

Two -supercongruences of truncated basic hypergeometric series containing two free parameters are established by employing specific identities for basic hypergeometric series. The results partly extend two -supercongruences that were earlier conjectured by the same authors and involve -supercongruences modulo the square and the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial. One of the newly proved -supercongruences is even conjectured to hold modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial.

The reconstruction of critical size bone defects is still clinically challenging. Even though the transplantation of autologous bone is used as gold standard, this therapy is accompanied by donor site morbidities as well as tissue limitations. The alternatively used allografts, which are devitalized due to thermal, chemical or physical processing, often lose their matrix integrity and have diminished biomechanical properties.

Local Inflammatory Response after Intramuscularly Implantation of Anti-Adhesive Plasma-Fluorocarbon-Polymer Coated Ti6AI4V Discs in Rats.

Orthopaedic implants and temporary osteosynthesis devices are commonly based on Titanium (Ti). For short-term devices, cell-material contact should be restricted for easy removal after bone healing. This could be achieved with anti-adhesive plasma-fluorocarbon-polymer (PFP) films created by low-temperature plasma processes.

Association of systemic antibody response against polyethylene terephthalate with inflammatory serum cytokine profile following implantation of differently coated vascular prostheses in a rat animal model.

Experimental studies demonstrated antibodies against matrix and coating of polyester-based vascular prostheses. Thus, this study examined associations of these antibodies with serum cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, and IL-10) and local inflammatory reactions. Rats (n = 8/group) intramuscularly received prosthesis segments [PET-C, PET-G, and PET-A groups: polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-based prostheses coated with bovine collagen and gelatin or human serum albumin, respectively; uncoated polytetrafluoroethylene-based (PTFE) prosthesis], with sham-operated controls.

Elliptic Solutions of Dynamical Lucas Sequences.

We study two types of dynamical extensions of Lucas sequences and give elliptic solutions for them. The first type concerns a level-dependent (or discrete time-dependent) version involving commuting variables. We show that a nice solution for this system is given by elliptic numbers.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has required facilities to quickly respond to a myriad of infection prevention recommendations, as well as design their own protocols. The varied and changing guidance has been difficult for staff to absorb and has presented challenges for managing compliance.

Approach: HCA Healthcare recognized the need for a coordinated approach to managing infection prevention guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic and a mechanism for monitoring compliance and responding to implementation challenges remotely.

The moral risks include moral distress, moral injury, ethical exhaustion, compassion fatigue, and practices that lead to lapses in ethical decision-making. The present manuscript presents foundational constructs related to death and loss (i.e., grief, bereavement, prolonged grief) providing empirical findings from recent research on the impact of death and loss on police officers' health, behavior, and overall functioning.

Background: While adequate pain relief is central to patient recovery and satisfaction, opioid use is associated with side effects, adverse drug events and opioid use disorder and therefore is under increased scrutiny. Enhanced surgical recovery protocols include multimodal pain management as a key process, but the impact of opioid dose as an independent variable has not been examined.

We provide several new -congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series with the base being an even power of . Our results mainly concern congruences modulo the square or the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial and complement corresponding ones of an earlier paper containing -congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series with the base being an odd power of . We also give a number of related conjectures including -congruences modulo the fifth power of a cyclotomic polynomial and a congruence for a truncated ordinary hypergeometric series modulo the seventh power of a prime greater than 3.

Effects of copper-impregnated collagen implants on local pro- and anti-inflammatory and regenerative tissue reactions following implantation in rats.

Combining collagen, an established regenerative biomaterial, and copper (Cu) with its known antibacterial and angiogenic effects could improve wound healing. However, Cu is also cytotoxic. Thus, this study aimed at examining the tissue reactions after simultaneous intramuscular implantation of collagen discs either without Cu (controls) or impregnated in 2, 20, or 200 mmol/L Cu acetate in 24 rats.

New Directions in Police Academy Training: A Call to Action.

The complexities of modern policing require law enforcement agencies to expand how officers are trained to do their jobs. It is not sufficient for training to focus solely on the law or on perishable skills; such as arrest and control; defensive tactics; driving; and firearms. The present manuscript addresses the critical importance of infusing academy training with the psychological skills essential for officers to meet the contemporary challenges of police work.

Understanding Readmissions in Medicare Beneficiaries During the 90-Day Follow-Up Period of an Acute Myocardial Infarction Admission.

Background Medicare has a voluntary episodic payment model for Medicare beneficiaries that bundles payment for the index acute myocardial infarction (AMI) hospitalization and all post-discharge services for a 90-day follow-up period. The purpose of this study is to report on the types and frequency of readmissions and identify demographic and clinical factors associated with readmission of Medicare beneficiaries that survived their AMI hospitalization. Methods and Results This retrospective study used the Inpatient Standard Analytical File for 2014.
