Cadaver-based abscess model for medical training.

Ultrasound imaging is a rapid and noninvasive tool ideal for the imaging of soft tissue infections and is associated with a change of clinician management plans in 50% of cases. We developed a realistic skin abscess diagnostic and therapeutic training model using fresh frozen cadavers and common, affordable materials. Details for construction of the model and suggested variations are presented.

Intractable epistaxis and systemic lupus: high-dose intravenous pulse steroids.

Importance: Epistaxis is most commonly an easily treated ENT entity with a relatively simple algorithm. Occasionally, however, it is encountered as a devastating disease process that can humble the otolaryngologist. In the setting of comorbidities that exacerbate bleeding, in this case vasculitis due to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), epistaxis can be life-threatening and refractory to conservative management.

Hurricanes provide impetus for health system reform in Louisiana.

The clear lesson, for Louisiana and any other state that is contemplating the potential disruption of health care following large-scale dislocations caused by either natural or man-made major disasters, is that proper mechanisms must be put in place before the event. This is necessary to provide greater portability of health care coverage and alternatively, temporary finance that coverage. Our Louisiana State Medical Society's plan Health Access Louisiana will help Louisiana recover from the devastating effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and serve as a model for the reform of our healthcare coverage system for our country.
