Epistemology and uncertainty: a follow-up study with third-year medical students.

Background And Objectives: Prior research results indicate a relationship between medical epistemology (ie, how a physician organizes and prioritizes the biological and psychosocial data of a patient presentation) and stress reactions to uncertainty among primary care physicians. However, little is known about when this relationship forms. The purpose of this study was to begin answering this question by exploring the relationship between medical epistemology and stress reactions to uncertainty among a group of 89 third-year medical students from the class of 2010 of a three-campus state medical school located in the southwestern US.

The influence of thyroid function on cognition in a sample of ethnically diverse, rural-dwelling women: a project FRONTIER study.

This study examined the influence of thyroid markers (TSH and FT4) on cognition in a sample of rural-dwelling women. Data were analyzed from 81 women who were enrolled in an ongoing study of rural health, Project FRONTIER. Cognition was assessed with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS).

Embolus in transit.

A patient who presented with recurrent syncopal episodes was discovered to have a right-sided heart mass, which was revealed as an embolus in transit resulting in a lethal pulmonary embolic event. The initial focus of etiology on tumor rather than thrombus was misleading. A higher index of suspicion of thrombus in right heart mass may help future patients receive more directed therapy.
