Objective: Experimental uncertainty will impact in silico model calculations of aerosol delivery and deposition. Patient-specific dosimetry models are often parameterized based on medical imaging data, which contain inherent experimental variability.
Methods: Here, we created and parameterized 1D models of three subject-specific asthmatic subjects and randomly assigned perturbations of up to 15 % on airway diameter, segmental volume, and defected volume.
Monami is the synchronous waving of a submerged seagrass bed in response to unidirectional fluid flow. Here we develop a multiphase model for the dynamical instabilities and flow-driven collective motions of buoyant, deformable seagrass. We show that the impedance to flow due to the seagrass results in an unstable velocity shear layer at the canopy interface, leading to a periodic array of vortices that propagate downstream.

To better model these bubbly flow systems, we use a coupled level set and volume of fluid approach integrated with a one-fluid transport of species model to study the dynamics of stationary and rising bubbles in reactive two-phase flows. To accomplish this, source terms are incorporated into the continuity and phase conservation equations to allow the bubble to grow or shrink as the species moves through the interface.

Electrochemically gas-evolving systems are utilized in alkaline water electrolysis, hydrogen production, and many other applications. To design and optimize these systems, high-fidelity models must account for electron-transfer, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, electrode porosity, and hydrodynamics as well as the interconnectedness of these phenomena. Further complicating these models is the production and presence of bubbles.

We present a review of four approaches and demonstrate the utility of these methods via their application to the same sample analytic model, the canonical double-gyre flow, highlighting the pros and cons of each approach. Two of the methods, the geometric and probabilistic approaches, are well established and require velocity field data over the time interval of interest to identify particularly important material lines and surfaces, and influential regions, respectively.

In light of its enduring appeal, and in support of good practice, we begin by investigating the effects of discretization and noise on two numerical approaches for calculating the FTLE field. A practical method to extract and refine FTLE ridges in two-dimensional flows, which builds on previous methods, is then presented.

Using filter-space techniques, we study the scale-to-scale transport of energy in a quasi-two-dimensional, weakly turbulent fluid flow averaged along the trajectories of fluid elements. We find that although the spatial mean of this Lagrangian-averaged flux is nearly unchanged from its Eulerian counterpart, the spatial structure of the scale-to-scale energy flux changes significantly. In particular, its features appear to correlate with the positions of Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS's).
