One of the greatest challenges worldwide is containing the spread of problematic microorganisms. A promising approach is the use of antimicrobial coatings (AMCs). The antimicrobial potential of certain metals, including copper and zinc, has already been verified.

Amyloid myopathy: expanding the clinical spectrum of transthyretin amyloidosis-case report and literature review.

We identified two patients with transthyretin (ATTR) amyloid myopathy (one ATTR variant amyloidosis, ATTRv; one wild-type ATTR amyloidosis, ATTRwt). Myopathy was the initial manifestation in ATTRwt, whereas it followed neuropathy and cardiomyopathy in ATTRv. The ATTRwt patient showed muscular tracer uptake on Tc-DPD planar scintigraphy at the time of initial diagnosis, consistent with ATTR amyloid myopathy.

Klotho is upregulated in human cardiomyopathy independently of circulating Klotho levels.

Klotho is an antiaging protein which exerts known cardioprotection. In kidney, trans-membrane Klotho acts as essential co-receptor of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). In the heart, soluble Klotho (sKlotho) protects from systolic dysfunction independently of FGF23.

Impact of background noise on reaction time and brain DC potential changes of VDT-based spatial attention.

Background noise is often discussed in terms of mental costs. In this study the effect of background noise on brain activity as reflected by the direct coupled (DC) potential was investigated by a within design in ten participants. During two successive blocks of 7 min each, participants performed 156 trials of a visual display terminal (VDT)-based visual-spatial attention task without noise and two blocks with a mixture of the environmental noises of barking dogs, traffic noise and irrelevant speech of 60 dBA.

Cardiac phosphorus-31 two-dimensional chemical shift imaging in patients with hereditary hemochromatosis.

Hemochromatosis is a hereditary iron overload syndrome characterized by increased iron storage, followed by liver cirrhosis and is often associated with restrictive cardiomyopathy. The purpose of this study was to detect alterations of cardiac high-energy phosphate metabolism in patients with hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC) prior to the development of structural heart diseases. Therefore cardiac phosphorus-31 two-dimensional chemical shift imaging ((31)P 2D CSI) was employed.
