Introduction: Restrictive practice use in residential aged care homes internationally is unacceptably high. Although policies and legislation mandate the reduction or elimination of restrictive practices, there remains a gap in knowledge regarding strategies that have been effective in achieving a sustained reduction in restraint use. There is an urgent need to identify effective and feasible interventions that aged care staff can implement in everyday practice to reduce restraint use.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces the Metrical Hebb Effect, demonstrating that people can learn repeating stress patterns across familiar word sequences, even without identical words being repeated.
  • Experiment 1 confirms this effect, showing significant retention of metrical patterns with repeated presentations.
  • Further experiments explore the longevity of this learning, revealing that while it can persist after a few non-repeating lists, it fades with longer gaps, suggesting that the learning process involves chunking patterns rather than just memorizing item positions.

Article Synopsis
  • Infestation is responsible for over two-thirds of blepharitis cases in the U.S., indicated by symptoms like crusty, red, or itchy eyelids and identifiable collarettes on eyelashes.
  • Lotilaner ophthalmic solution 0.25% is the first FDA-approved treatment for blepharitis that effectively eliminates mites in 50-67% of patients after short-term use, with benefits lasting up to one year.
  • By addressing the infestation that causes blepharitis, eye care professionals can improve overall patient outcomes, reduce the need for ongoing care, and optimize healthcare resource usage within the community.

Knowledge of anticipatory stress responses before sports competitions is limited, thus this study examined the relationship between anticipatory stress in terms of salivary cortisol secretion in athletes on the morning of a competition and a comparison baseline day. Thirty-seven athletes collected three saliva samples over a 45-min period post-awakening (0, 30 and 45 min). Anticipatory stress was expressed as Area Under the Curve compared to ground (AUCg; total cortisol secretion).

Article Synopsis
  • Sleep disorders negatively impact health and daily functioning, but weighted blankets could offer a non-drug treatment option to improve sleep.
  • A review of the literature found that while adults showed positive results like better sleep and mood with weighted blankets, outcomes for children were mixed, with only one study focusing on their implementation.
  • Overall, weighted blankets seem effective for adults, and while parents support their use for kids, there's a need for standardized guidelines and more research on best practices.

Specialist, associate specialist and specialty (SAS) doctors constitute a marginalised professional group who can struggle to achieve the professional development they desire. Our primary objective was to understand, from a theoretically informed perspective, the ways in which the professional identity of SAS doctors influences their professional development opportunities, including through appraisal. Ten UK SAS doctors participated in in-depth, narrative interviews.

The magnetoelectric effect (ME) is an important strain mediated-phenomenon in a ferromagnetic-piezoelectric composite for a variety of sensors and signal processing devices. A bias magnetic field, in general, is essential to realize a strong ME coupling in most composites. Magnetic phases with (i) high magnetostriction for strong piezomagnetic coupling and (ii) large anisotropy field that acts as a built-in bias field are preferred so that miniature, ME composite-based devices can operate without the need for an external magnetic field.

The nature of nonlinear magnetoelectric (NLME) effect has been investigated at room-temperature in a single-crystal Zn substituted nickel ferrite. Tuning of the frequency of magnetostatic surface wave (MSSW) modes under an applied pulsed DC electric field/current has been utilized to probe the effect. The frequencies of the modes at 8-20 GHz were found to decrease by ~ 400 MHz for an applied DC power P of ~ 100 mW and the frequency shift was the same for all of the MSSW modes and linearly proportional to P.

Background And Aims: Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) causes severe cardiovascular disease from childhood. Conventional drug therapy is usually ineffective; lipoprotein apheresis (LA) is often required. Liver transplantation (LT) can correct the metabolic defect but is considered a treatment of last resort.

The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic placed significant pressure on healthcare systems across the globe, with many clinicians redeployed in unfamiliar specialties or disciplines. In England, a just-in-time interprofessional training and education programme was rapidly established to upskill nearly 2,500 people who volunteered to work at the NHS Nightingale London Hospital. Of the 488 respondents in our evaluation, representing a 20% response rate, most felt confident and safe to start work in NHS Nightingale London.

Introduction: Simulation-based medical education (SBME) debriefing - a construct distinct from clinical debriefing - is used following simulated scenarios and is central to learning and development in fields ranging from aviation to emergency medicine. However, little research into SBME debriefing in prehospital medicine exists. This qualitative study explored the facilitation and effects of prehospital SBME debriefing, and identified obstacles to debriefing, using the London's Air Ambulance Pre-Hospital Care Course (PHCC) as a model.

Clinicians with teaching and training roles should be adequately trained and assessed. However, some debate exists as to what the nature of this training should be. Historically, a postgraduate certificate in education was a pre-requisite to becoming a GP trainer but this is changing with growing concern that such a pre-requisite might act as a deterrent to potential GP trainers.

Background: Uncertainty is particularly obvious in emergency medicine (EM) due to the characteristics of the patient cohort, time constraints, and busy environment. Periods of transition are thought to add to uncertainty. Managing uncertainty is recognised as a key ability for medical practice, but is often not addressed explicitly.

The objective was to determine the clinical and biochemical success rates and assess the nature of follow-up after adrenalectomy in patients with unilateral primary aldosteronism (PA), subtyped by adrenal vein sampling (AVS) in West Australia (WA) using the Primary Aldosteronism Surgical Outcome (PASO) criteria. Clinical and biochemical outcomes were retrospectively evaluated in patients with unilateral PA who underwent adrenalectomy according to AVS between September 2017 and September 2020. Pre- and post-surgical data were collected using a standardised questionnaire, review of clinic letters and examination of private and public pathology results and radiological reports.

This work is on the design, fabrication and characterization of a hexagonal ferrite band-pass filter that can be tuned either with a magnetic field or an electric field. The filter operation is based on a straight-edge Y-type hexagonal ferrite resonator symmetrically coupled to the input and output microstrip transmission lines. The ZnYfilter demonstrated magnetic field tunability in the 8-12 GHz frequency range by applying an in-plane bias magnetic field H provided by a built-in permanent magnet.
