Does a novel teaching approach work? A Students' perspective.

Background: There is always a call for educational reform and further research to improve educational programs. The continuous development of new educational approaches is a work in progress. Educational strategies like team-based learning, flipped classroom, and lottery-based token economy, were used to develop a novel teaching approach.

Rural track training based at a small regional campus: equivalency of training, residency choice, and practice location of graduates.

Purpose: Ten years of data for the rural-based Trover Campus (ULTC) were compared with data for the main campus of the University of Louisville School of Medicine to determine whether educational outcomes were equivalent and whether this method of optimizing the affinity model was effective in placing graduates in rural practice.

Method: Demographic data and academic measures were compared for 1,391 graduates (60 from ULTC) for 2001-2010. A noninferiority model was developed to compare clinical experiences for each campus cohort.

The Black Church is the only institution that has consistently served the interest of African Americans, and there is no other institution in the African American community that rivals its influence (Camara, 2004). The spiritual well-fare, social support, health, and well-being of its people have been one of its main goals. With health disparities of African Americans still at an alarming rate, the Black Church has used informal education as a means to impart knowledge on health, as well as other non-religious and religious topics.

Perceptions of intimidation and bullying in dental schools: a multi-national study.

Objectives: To determine first year dental students' perceptions of intimidation by instructors and bullying by fellow students.

Methods: Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of first year dental students from seven dental schools representing five countries; one each from Romania, South Africa, Australia and the U.S.

Dental students' and faculty members' perceptions of incivility in the classroom.

The purpose of this study was to compare dental students' and faculty members' perceptions of classroom incivility and to determine how many students willingly engage in uncivil behavior in the classroom. A web-based survey research design was used to obtain information regarding uncivil classroom behaviors from dental students and full- and part-time dental faculty members at a midwestern U.S.

Rethinking the role of community-based clinical education in pediatric dentistry.

The early childhood caries epidemic has prompted a look at predoctoral clinical dental education in pediatric dentistry. The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of community-based clinical education (CBE) to procedural and patient diversity in predoctoral pediatric dental education. Using procedural and demographic data from pediatric clinical experiences of the dental class of 2007 at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, profiles of patient diversity, clinical pediatric dental procedures, and student efficiency were developed for both CBE sites and the campus-based clinic.

Enhancing communication in dental clinics with linguistically different patients.

Comparing fourth-year dental student productivity and experiences in a dental school with community-based clinical education.

Objective structured clinical examination use in advanced orthodontic dental education.

Introduction: Continuous evaluation of residents and the advanced education curriculum is required to maintain the quality of a program and ensure appropriate accreditation status. The purpose of this project was to describe the process of introducing the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) into an advanced orthodontic education program and to evaluate its impact on the curriculum.

Methods: To determine the content of the examination, 60 orthodontic practitioners were consulted to identify the most important clinical skills that an entry-level practitioner must be able to perform proficiently.

Emotional intelligence and perceived stress in dental undergraduates: a multinational survey.

This multinational survey investigated the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and perceived stress (PS) in seven countries. First-year dental undergraduates attending a dental school in England, Greece, Romania, South Africa, Australia, and the United States and three schools in Malaysia were invited to complete a set of questionnaires on age, gender, academic background, satisfaction with career choice, EI, and PS. Of 860 questionnaires distributed, 596 were fully completed--a response rate of 69.

In-state graduate retention for U.S. dental schools.

Currently, dental school graduates are viewed as a resource by their institutions and those who underwrite their educational costs. The purpose of this study was to determine the percentage of dental school graduates who practiced dentistry in the same state as their dental school. Using the American Dental Association database of approximately 35,000 graduates between 1985 and 1995, the data were analyzed to determine the percentage of graduates who were retained and currently reside in the state of their dental school versus those located outside of that state ("exported").
