Motivation: Few Bayesian methods for analyzing high-dimensional sparse survival data provide scalable variable selection, effect estimation and uncertainty quantification. Such methods often either sacrifice uncertainty quantification by computing maximum a posteriori estimates, or quantify the uncertainty at high (unscalable) computational expense.

Results: We bridge this gap and develop an interpretable and scalable Bayesian proportional hazards model for prediction and variable selection, referred to as sparse variational Bayes.

A full-vectorial H-field formulation-based finite element approach is used to optimize a biosensor structure incorporating a horizontal slot waveguide. It is designed to detect DNA hybridization through the change of the effective index of the waveguide structure. The key parameters, such as normalized power confinement, power density, change in effective index, and sensitivity are presented by optimizing the device parameters of the slot waveguide.

We report what we believe to be the first highly symmetric first-order IR femtosecond laser fiber Bragg gratings within the telecommunications C band in free-standing optical fiber, fabricated with a relatively low NA lens and without use of oil immersion techniques. This grating features the smallest dimensions for a point-by-point fiber grating reported so far (to our knowledge). This achievement paves the way to rapid mass manufacturing of highly efficient and stable Bragg gratings using ultrafast lasers in any type of fiber.
