Article Synopsis
  • A clinical trial involving 271 abruptly weaned crossbred steer calves assessed the effects of meloxicam, a long-acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, on viral titers and health when given with a respiratory vaccine upon arriving at the feedlot.
  • Key measures like viral antibody titers and body weight were tracked at various intervals, revealing that while overall antibody and body weight increased, there were no significant differences between the control and experimental groups.
  • Despite the absence of a decreased vaccine response, meloxicam was linked to an increased risk of health issues, suggesting it may negatively impact the calves' health outcomes.

An outbreak of congenital diffuse hyperplastic goiter and chondrodystrophy occurred among springborn calves at an Angus-based cow-calf operation in southern Alberta. Although these diseases are observed globally in multiple species, reports of their occurrence concurrently are exceptionally rare. A nutritional cause is highly suspected as previous matings between the same sires and dams resulted in apparently normal calves.
