Complications of pregnancy present an opportunity to identify women at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Placental abruption is a severe and understudied pregnancy complication, and its relationship with CVD is poorly understood. The California Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project database was used to identify women with hospitalized pregnancies in California between 2005 and 2009, with follow-up through 2011.

Episodic memory: A hierarchy of spatiotemporal concepts.

We propose a new model of episodic memory. It consists of a hierarchy of partial sequences of events, blended for consistency across space and time by feedforward/feedback links to concepts expressing their shared information. This blended concept hierarchy is acquired and represented incrementally through synaptic or connection-weighted adaptation in a neural network with episodic memory capability.

Screening blood donors for diabetes: analysis of use, accuracy, and cost.

Background: The objective was to determine if a free, voluntary diabetes screening program as a part of the blood donation process might be cost-effective.

Study Design And Methods: During the first 6 months of the program, 26,415 donors were screened using a single random plasma glucose (RPG) level. All donors were asked to eat before donation.

Hydrogen sulfide as an oxygen sensor in trout gill chemoreceptors.

O2 chemoreceptors elicit cardiorespiratory reflexes in all vertebrates, but consensus on O2-sensing signal transduction mechanism(s) is lacking. We recently proposed that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) metabolism is involved in O2 sensing in vascular smooth muscle. Here, we examined the possibility that H2S is an O2 sensor in trout chemoreceptors where the first pair of gills is a primary site of aquatic O2 sensing and the homolog of the mammalian carotid body.

eLoom and Flatland: specification, simulation and visualization engines for the study of arbitrary hierarchical neural architectures.

eLoom is an open source graph simulation software tool, developed at the University of New Mexico (UNM), that enables users to specify and simulate neural network models. Its specification language and libraries enables users to construct and simulate arbitrary, potentially hierarchical network structures on serial and parallel processing systems. In addition, eLoom is integrated with UNM's Flatland, an open source virtual environments development tool to provide real-time visualizations of the network structure and activity.
