The health, economic, and social burden of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Africa remains substantial, with elimination efforts hindered by persistent sociopolitical instability, including ongoing conflicts among political and ethnic groups that lead to internal displacement and migration. Here, we explore how innovative technologies can support Africa in addressing NTDs amidst such instability, through analysis of WHO and UNHCR data and a systematic literature review. Method: The course was developed through 5 iterations over 28 months, moving from a half-day session to 2 full-day courses with more scenarios.

Methods: Prospective data were collected in 424 patients who were reviewed in the NHS Lothian HNC multidisciplinary meeting from May 2016 to May 2018. Staging and follow-up CT chest imaging were reviewed to identify and assess pulmonary nodules in all patients.
Ethanol exposure during the early stages of embryonic development can lead to a range of morphological and behavioral differences termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). In a zebrafish model, we have shown that acute ethanol exposure at 8-10 hr postfertilization (hpf), a critical time of development, produces birth defects similar to those clinically characterized in FASD. Dysregulation of the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) pathway has been implicated as a molecular basis for many of the birth defects caused by prenatal alcohol exposure.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact on oncologic outcomes of initiation of rectal cancer treatment within 60 days of diagnosis.
Methods: This was a retrospective review of stage II/III rectal cancer patients performed using the United States Rectal Cancer Consortium, a collaboration of 6 academic medical centers.
A wide range of stakeholders recognise that physicians play a vital role in medical innovation and, in particular, the importance of boundary-spanning engagement between physicians and industry in clinical research. While UK physicians are keen to take part in research, this article draws on a range of literature to identify apparent and anticipated challenges that discourage or prevent cross-sector engagement by physician researchers. To encourage greater interaction and exploration of associated support mechanisms, we present a full spectrum of engagement modes, funding opportunities and illustrative initiatives, showing how different stakeholders (from government institutions, charities, professional bodies and industry) can contribute to improving the engagement of physicians in boundary spanning research.

It predominantly affects the rectosigmoid colon in otherwise healthy, middle-aged males. Definitive diagnosis and treatment are surgical; however, patients are frequently misdiagnosed, which often results in a protracted clinical course.
