The adventures of psychiatric reform in Greece: 1999-2019.

Psychiatric care in Greece has a long history of traditional in-patient treatment in large public institutions (the public asylum period), which lasted until 1983. European Economic Community (EEC) intervention in 1984 marked a transitional period (1984-1989) characterised by the beginning of the transformation of the mental healthcare system. The current reform era started in 1999 and has included new mental health law, the closure of six public mental hospitals and the establishment of several sectorised mental health services.

The relationship between acculturation factors and symptoms of depression: a cross-sectional study with immigrants living in Athens.

The process of acculturation observed in immigrants is part of an adjustment to the values and norms of a new society, and possibly the loss of norms of the society of origin. Acculturation has been linked to stress-related psychological disorders such as depression. The present study investigates the relationship between three acculturation domains (everyday life behaviors, wishful orientation/nostos, and ethnic identity) and symptoms of depression in a sample of foreign immigrants living in Athens, Greece.

Attitudes toward help-seeking and duration of untreated mental disorders in a sectorized Athens area of Greece.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association of opinions towards seeking psychiatric help with the duration of untreated mental disorders in a sectorized Athens area, served by a Community Mental Health Centre. The sample consisted of 134 individuals who had sought help from health or mental health non sectorized services prior to their visit to the Centre (group A) and 156 individuals whose visit to the Center was their first ever contact with a mental health service (group B). Opinions were assessed by the "Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help scale.

Major depression across West Bank: a cross-sectional general population study.

Background: In recent decades entire populations have been living under chronic strain, apprehension and violence. This is the case for Palestinians. Despite the increased volume of mass media attention on this situation, little is known about the psychological effects of this condition on this population.

Mental health treatment fearfulness and help-seeking.

A majority of people meeting the criteria for mental disorders underutilize mental health services. Treatment fearfulness is a barrier to help-seeking. This study explores the way treatment fearfulness affects the help-seeking behaviour of individuals who sought help from the Community Mental Health Centre.

Diachronic trends of employment outcome of prevocational training in psychiatric rehabilitation.

Background: Although many rehabilitation programmes of prevocational training for chronic mentally ill persons living in the community have been funded, there is scarce literature about the diachronic trends of their long-term employment outcome. Thus the aim of the present study was to compare the 2-year employment outcome of three groups of chronic psychiatric outpatients, having attended similar prevocational rehabilitation programmes in different periods of time.

Methods: The first group (1984 to 1986) comprised 67 rehabilitees, the second (1988 to 1989) 53 rehabilitees and the third (2000 to 2001) 56 rehabilitees.

"On the spot" interventions by mental health nurses in inpatient psychiatric wards in Greece.

The objective of this research was to explore the "on-the spot" clinical interventions mental health nurses make in critical incidents on inpatient psychiatric wards. Mental health nurses play a key role in the management of psychiatric critical incidents. Nurses' autonomy, decision-making, and training in clinical interventions are important issues in psychiatric nursing practice.

Reform of the mental healthcare system in Greece, 1984-2006.

Greece joined the European Community in 1981 and, 3 years later, the Commission of the European Communities provided financial and technical assistance under EEC Regulation 815/84 for the modernisation of the Greek mental healthcare system, with an emphasis on decentralisation and the development of community-based services, as well as the deinstitutionalisation of long-stay patients and improvement of conditions in public mental hospitals.

Nursing students' attitude change towards mental illness and psychiatric case recognition after a clerkship in psychiatry.

Attitudes towards mental illness were measured in all 92 students of the seventh semester in the School of Nursing of Athens University before (time 1) and after (time 2) the completion of 40 and 90 hours of lectures on clinical psychiatry and clerkship, respectively. The instrument used to measure attitudinal dimensions was the Cohen and Struening's Opinions about Mental Illness (OMI) scale, which yieldsfive factors and was proven to be reliable and valid in previous studies. Hypothetical case vignettes were used to assess psychiatric case recognition.

The mental health care delivery system in greece: regional variation and socioeconomic correlates.

BACKGROUND: In Greece, the functional capacity of the mental health care system until 1980, was totally inadequate to meet the increasing mental health needs of the population and to provide efficient and community-based services. This situation was brought to the attention of the Commission of European Communities and a special EEC Regulation No 815/84 provided the financial technical support for an extended psychiatric reform programme. The psychiatric reform programme initiated in 1984 and ended in 1995.
