The Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) is effective for speed control in sensorless Induction Motor (IM) drives, particularly at zero and very low speeds. This study enhances MRAS's resilience and dynamic performance by integrating an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) controller into sensorless vector-controlled IM drives. The research addresses challenges related to parameter uncertainties, load variations, and external disturbances through the combination of MRAS and ANFIS.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined a tropical estuary affected by pollutants, highlighting that sediment had higher contamination levels than surface water, especially in heavy metals and hydrocarbons.
  • The microbial community analysis found that Proteobacteria were dominant in both water and sediment, with significant differences in microbiome composition and functionality between the two environments.
  • The sediment microbiome showed adaptations to pollutants, suggesting its potential use for bioremediation efforts in cleaning up the estuary.

Background: Among frequent healthcare users is a small group called "high-care users", with ≥ 10 hospital visits annually. They consume a disproportionate share of the healthcare budget, and their care is often inappropriate and unnecessary.

Objectives: To assess the prevalence and determinants of persistent high-care (PHC) use (≥ 10 visits in two consecutive years) among National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) enrollees.

Detecting faulty pipelines in water management systems is crucial for ensuring a reliable supply of clean water. Traditional inspection methods are often time-consuming, costly, and prone to errors. This study introduces an AI-based model utilizing images to detect pipeline defects, focusing on leaks, cracks, and corrosion.

Background: The incidence of lung cancer is unequally distributed in France. Although several studies have shown a link between the socioeconomic environment of populations and the incidence of cancer, the contribution has not been quantified. We aimed to analyse the geographical variability of lung cancer incidence in Normandy and calculate the proportion explained by the socioeconomic environment.

Introduction: falls in the elderly are a neglected health problem in many societies, particularly in the developing world. Many health and social service providers are unprepared to prevent and manage falls and related injuries as they lack sufficient knowledge to identify their predisposing factors. For this reason, this study aims to identify the pattern of falls and its determinants among the elderly in northern Nigeria.

Background: The role of allogeneic placental tissue (APT) in genital gender-affirming surgery (GAS) is not well understood. Penile inversion vaginoplasty (PIV), the most common genital GAS, often results in tissue healing- or wound-related complications, including scarring and neovaginal stenosis. Surgical reoperation and revision vaginoplasty are common.

Our institution introduced fixed-dose prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) to streamline order verification and medication administration. Previous studies using fixed-dose PCC for vitamin K antagonist reversal showed comparable efficacy to weight-based dosing. To compare fixed versus weight-based PCC dosing for reversal of Factor Xa Inhibitor (FXaI) effects.

Background: The increasing prevalence of obesity and overweight among health workers calls for an appraisal of their lifestyle. This study assessed medical practitioners' workhour feeding and lifestyle practices and explored the relationship between these practices and their body mass index (BMI).

Methods: The survey involved 321 medical practitioners selected from 9 northern Nigeria hospitals in 2021.

We present the development of a platform of well-defined, dynamic covalent amphiphilic polymer conetworks (APCN) based on an α,ω-dibenzaldehyde end-functionalized linear amphiphilic poly(ethylene glycol)--poly(propylene glycol)--poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG--PPG--PEG, Pluronic) copolymer end-linked with a triacylhydrazide oligo(ethylene glycol) triarmed star cross-linker. The developed APCNs were characterized in terms of their rheological (increase in the storage modulus by a factor of 2 with increase in temperature from 10 to 50 °C), self-healing, self-assembling, and mechanical properties and evaluated as a matrix for gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) in both the stretched and unstretched states. Our results show that water-loaded APCNs almost completely self-mend, self-organize at room temperature into a body-centered cubic structure with long-range order exhibiting an aggregation number of around 80, and display an exceptional room temperature stretchability of ∼2400%.

Gaze directed at the observer (direct gaze) is a highly salient social signal. Despite the existence of a preferential orientation toward direct gaze, none of the studies carried out so far seem to have explicitly studied the time course of information processing during gaze direction judgment. In an eye direction judgment task, participants were presented with a sketch of a face.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), comprising deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a prevalent cardiovascular condition, ranking third globally after myocardial infarction and stroke. The risk of VTE rises with age, posing a growing concern in aging populations. Acute PE, with its high morbidity and mortality, emphasizes the need for early diagnosis and intervention.

Inherited cardiomyopathies represent a highly heterogeneous group of cardiac diseases. DNA variants in genes expressed in cardiomyocytes cause a diverse spectrum of cardiomyopathies, ultimately leading to heart failure, arrythmias, and sudden cardiac death. We applied massive parallel DNA sequencing using a 72-gene panel for studying inherited cardiomyopathies.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a life-threatening infectious disease. The standard treatment is up to 90% effective; however, it requires the administration of four antibiotics (isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol [HRZE]) over long time periods. This harsh treatment process causes adherence issues for patients because of the long treatment times and a myriad of adverse effects.

Among other bodily signals, the perception of sensations arising spontaneously on the skin with no external triggers contributes to body awareness. The topic of spontaneous sensations (SPS) being quite recent in the literature, there is still a debate whether this phenomenon is elicited by peripheral cutaneous units' activity underlying tactile perception or originates directly from central mechanisms. In a first experiment, we figured that, if SPS depended on peripheral afferents, their perception on the glabrous hand should relate to the hand tactile sensitivity.

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a significant issue affecting intimate relationships, with a noteworthy prevalence found among adult males in Northwest Nigeria, where research on this topic is limited.
  • A study involving 392 males revealed that 52.3% experienced ED, mostly classified as mild, and several factors—like age, body mass index (BMI), and marital status—were linked to its occurrence.
  • The findings highlight that age (50 years and older) and being overweight/obese are strong predictors of ED, emphasizing the importance of early screening and addressing lifestyle factors to improve sexual health in this population.

Snakebite is a major public health problem with an estimated global burden of 5 million people per annum. Data on snakebite envenoming in children are very limited and is unclear whether there is a significant difference in severity between adults and children. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis of observational studies on snakebite in children to obtain a more precise estimate of case fatality rate (CFR) as well as to explore the differences in outcome between children and adults.

This study aimed to develop a new scale, the Early Psychotic Symptoms screening scale (EPSy), to assess the prodromes of psychotic symptoms in children aged 4 to 13 years. Two versions were proposed: one to assess the child's current behavior and one to assess the child's behavior when he/she was 2 years old. The second aim of this study was to investigate the presence of these symptoms at the age of 2 years and their evolution up to the child's current age.
