Article Synopsis
- Management of secondary hyperparathyroidism is difficult with traditional treatments, but the calcimimetic cinacalcet HCl improves sensitivity to calcium and lowers parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels.
- A phase 3 study involving 395 hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients showed that cinacalcet was significantly more effective than a placebo in reducing PTH levels, with notable improvements in the proportion of patients who achieved target iPTH levels.
- Cinacalcet also reduced serum calcium and phosphorus levels, with mild side effects, presenting it as a promising new option for managing secondary hyperparathyroidism in dialysis patients.
