- Generating neural stem cells (NSC) from somatic cells using transcription factors has risks, including tumor formation and genomic instability, making clinical use challenging.
- A new method using small molecules instead of viral vectors has been developed, efficiently transforming mouse fibroblasts into NSC-like cells (SMINS) that mimic the properties of natural NSC.
- SMINS cells can differentiate into various types of neural cells and, by avoiding genome alteration, present a safer option for potential clinical applications in treating human diseases.
