College students lack fact-checking skills, which may lead them to accept information at face value. We report findings from an institution participating in the Digital Polarization Initiative (DPI), a national effort to teach students lateral reading strategies used by expert fact-checkers to verify online information. Lateral reading requires users to leave the information (website) to find out whether someone has already fact-checked the claim, identify the original source, or learn more about the individuals or organizations making the claim.

Background: Elevated postprandial triglycerides reflect a proatherogenic milieu, but underlying mechanisms are unclear.

Fibromax is a diagnostic tool composed of the combination of 4 non-invasive biomarker panels for the diagnosis of steatosis (SteatoTest), necrosis and inflammation (ActiTest and NashTest-2) and fibrosis (FibroTest). The purpose of this study was to assess the performance of these biomarker panels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). All patients underwent routine labs, a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, a liver proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) to measure intrahepatic triglyceride content, and a percutaneous liver biopsy to establish the diagnosis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and to grade and stage the disease in those patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by H-MRS.

Background: Young women (aged ≤55 years) with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) have poorer health status outcomes than similarly aged men. Low omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) have been implicated as risk factors for cardiovascular outcomes in AMI patients, but it is not clear whether young women have similar or different post-AMI omega-3 FA profiles compared with young men.

Insulin resistance has been associated with higher plasma amino acid (AA) concentrations, but majority of studies have used indirect measures of insulin resistance. Our main objective was to define the relationship between plasma AA concentrations and a direct measure of insulin resistance in women and men. Background: Although low plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations have been shown to predict risk of hypertension and associated cardiovascular disease (CVD), vitamin D repletion has not consistently lowered blood pressure or decreased CVD. Background: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a low-density lipoprotein-like particle largely independent of known risk factors and predictive of cardiovascular disease. Statins may offset the risk associated with elevated Lp(a), but it is unknown whether Lp(a) is a determinant of residual risk in the setting of low low-density lipoprotein cholesterol after potent statin therapy.
