Urethral length and its relationship with anthropometric parameters in adult male Nigerians.

Background: The available literature on urethral length in adult males is limited. To the best of our knowledge, such measurement has never been carried out amongst Nigerian and African men. This study aimed to document average urethral length as well as the relationship between urethral length and age, and anthropometric parameters amongst the Nigerian male adult population to add to the database for urethral length.

An appraisal of the presentation and management of adult intussusception at a Nigerian Tertiary Hospital.

Background: Intussusception in adults is considered rare in surgical practice. It is the causative lesion in a small proportion of cases of intestinal obstruction and lower gastrointestinal bleeding. In the last decade, the incidence of adult intussusception appears to be increasing at our centre.

Acute perforated appendicitis in adults: Management and complications in Lagos, Nigeria.

Background: Acute perforation of the appendix is one of the complications of appendicitis that is associated with increased morbidity and mortality and hence regarded as a surgical emergency. Risk factors for perforated appencidicits include extremes of age, male sex, pregnancy, immunosuppression, comorbid medical conditions and previous abdominal surgery.

Objectives: This study focuses on the pattern of presentation, risk factors, morbidity and mortality of patients managed for perforated appendicitis in our centre.

Chemical and biological studies on Bridelia ferruginea grown in Nigeria.

Phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract of dried leaves of Bridelia ferruginea led to the isolation and identification of fourteen compounds (1-14): compound 1 [mixture of palmitic, stearic and oleic acids], stearyl monoester of 2-O-β-ᴅ-glucosylglycerol (2), 6β-hydroxy-(20R)-24-ethylcholest-4-en-3-one (3a), 6β-hydroxy-(20R)-24-ethylcholest-4,22-dien-3-one (3b), lutein (4), vomifoliol (5), corilagin (6), kaempferide-3-O-β-ᴅ-glucoside (7), myricetin (8), isomericitrin (9), isoquercetin (10), myricitrin (11), quercitrin (12), rutin (13), and β-sitosterol glucoside (14). The total extract exhibited moderate activity towards CB2 receptor and 90% inhibition against leishmanial pathogen Trypanosoma brucei. Compound 4 exhibited 73% displacement in CB2 receptor with IC 56.

Pendulous urethral stricture: peculiarities and relevance of longitudinal penile fascio-cutaneous flap reconstruction in poor resource community.

Purpose: To describe peculiarities of pendulous urethral stricture in South Western Nigeria and how prevalent social and environmental factors have made longitudinal distal penile island flap the preferred option for reconstruction of pendulous urethral stricture in such a poor resource community.

Materials And Methods: All patients presenting with stricture located in the pendulous urethra in 3 hospitals in south western Nigeria, over a 5 year period were interviewed and had urethral reconstruction using longitudinal distal penile fascio-cutaneous island flap under spinal anesthesia.

Results: Thirty four cases were treated by this method during this period.
