Article Synopsis
  • * Almost 20% of the global Pango lineages were found in Africa, with five dominant lineages emerging over time, and the viruses showed a closer relationship to European strains.
  • * The findings highlight important viral characteristics and stress the necessity for enhanced surveillance in Africa to improve public health responses to COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 dynamics have been extensively studied globally, but limited research has focused on the situation in Africa, prompting an analysis of over 2400 SARS-CoV-2 genomes from 33 African countries.
  • The study found that only 143 out of the 782 global Pango lineages circulated in Africa, with five lineages dominating at different times, and revealed significant variation in COVID-19 death rates across the continent.
  • Phylogenetic analysis indicated that African viruses are closely related to those in Europe and Oceania, highlighting a need for improved genomic surveillance in Africa to understand the COVID-19 pandemic's dynamics better.

Gaseous emission, particulate emission, biological molecules and other harmful substances discharge into the atmosphere from dumpsite environment. The carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) content of the gaseous emission from different platforms and offsets of the Awotan dump site were measured. P Sense CO2 Meter AZ 7755 was used to measure the level of carbon dioxide gas, temperature and relative humidity.
