X-ray Laue microdiffraction aims to characterize microstructural and mechanical fields in polycrystalline specimens at the sub-micrometre scale with a strain resolution of ∼10. Here, a new and unique Laue microdiffraction setup and alignment procedure is presented, allowing measurements at temperatures as high as 1500 K, with the objective to extend the technique for the study of crystalline phase transitions and associated strain-field evolution that occur at high temperatures. A method is provided to measure the real temperature encountered by the specimen, which can be critical for precise phase-transition studies, as well as a strategy to calibrate the setup geometry to account for the sample and furnace dilation using a standard α-alumina single crystal.

Early-stage cervical cancer (ESCC) is managed with radical hysterectomy, a procedure that can be performed either via open surgery or minimally invasive surgery (MIS), the latter of which is accomplished via traditional laparoscopy or robotic-assisted surgery. Previously, MIS was routinely incorporated into the management of ESCC due to the approach's reduced operative morbidity and truncated hospital stay duration, but more recent clinical evidence has since impugned the efficacy of MIS because of the reportedly inferior disease-free survival and overall survival outcomes compared to open surgery. However, additional studies have documented equivalent outcomes among the various surgical modalities, suggesting further exploration of clinical factors as we endeavor to conclusively determine the standard of care for patients diagnosed with ESCC.

Laue microdiffraction is an X-ray diffraction technique that allows for the non-destructive acquisition of spatial maps of crystallographic orientation and the strain state of (poly)crystalline specimens. To do so, diffraction patterns, consisting of thousands of Laue spots, are collected and analyzed at each location of the spatial maps. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of a paclitaxel, carboplatin and metformin regimen in the first-line treatment of advanced-stage ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal carcinoma.

Methods: Eligible subjects underwent surgery and 6 cycles of neoadjuvant or adjuvant dose-dense intravenous paclitaxel (80 mg/m²), carboplatin (area under the curve 5 or 6 on Day 1), and oral metformin (850 mg daily). Study participants who completed their primary therapy and attained a clinically defined complete or partial response (PR) were treated with a planned 12 cycles of paclitaxel (135 mg/m² every 21 days) and metformin (850 mg twice daily) maintenance therapy.

A feed-forward neural-network-based model is presented to index, in real time, the diffraction spots recorded during synchrotron X-ray Laue microdiffraction experiments. Data dimensionality reduction is applied to extract physical 1D features from the 2D X-ray diffraction Laue images, thereby making it possible to train a neural network on the fly for any crystal system. The capabilities of the LaueNN model are illustrated through three examples: a two-phase nano-structure, a textured high-symmetry specimen deformed and a polycrystalline low-symmetry material.

Background: Robotic-assisted surgery facilitates the performance of numerous, complex procedures, namely conferring precision, flexibility, and control that is otherwise unavailable with conventional laparoscopy; and compared to open surgery, robotic-assisted surgery is ostensibly associated with fewer complications, reduced intraoperative complications, and shorter hospital stay duration. Nevertheless, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Food and Drug Administration have criticized the pervasive acceptance of robotic-assisted surgery, given the absence of randomized clinical trial data compared to traditional laparoscopy and open procedures, not to mention the increased surgical cost.

Conclusions: While the research data continue to be borne out, surgeons should exercise considerable discretion in selecting the surgical approach from which their patients would derive the greatest clinical benefit.

To explore an effective route of customizing the superelasticity (SE) of NiTi shape memory alloys via modifying the grain structure, binary NiTi (wt) alloys were fabricated in as-cast, hot swaged, and hot-rolled conditions, presenting contrasting grain sizes and grain boundary types. synchrotron X-ray Laue microdiffraction and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction techniques were employed to unravel the underlying grain structure mechanisms that cause the diversity of SE performance among the three materials. The evolution of lattice rotation, strain field, and phase transformation has been revealed at the micro- and mesoscale, and the effect of grain structure on SE performance has been quantified.

Talc is a desiccant that has been historically used as baby powder by numerous women to enhance their feminine hygiene. Platinum-resistant ovarian cancer frequently develops in response to multiple lines of chemotherapy, whereupon the disease becomes relatively intractable and clinical recourse is limited. Grain boundary formation during coarsening of nanoporous gold (NPG) is investigated wherein a nanocrystalline structure can form by particles detaching and reattaching to the structure. MicroLaue and electron backscatter diffraction measurements demonstrate that an in-grain orientation spread develops as NPG is coarsened. The volume fraction of the NPG sample is near the limit of bicontinuity, at which simulations predict that a bicontinuous structure begins to fragment into independent particles during coarsening.

This article reports on energy-dispersive micro Laue (µLaue) diffraction of an individual gold nanowire that was mechanically deformed in three-point bending geometry using an atomic force microscope. The nanowire deformation was investigated by scanning the focused polychromatic X-ray beam along the nanowire and recording µLaue diffraction patterns using an energy-sensitive pnCCD detector that permits measurement of the angular positions of the Laue spots and the energies of the diffracted X-rays simultaneously.
