Although metal-catalysts are commonly used to create nanoscale materials at surfaces, little is quantitatively known or understood about the depth distribution profile of the catalyst during the growth process. Using X-ray reflectivity, we report the first quantitative investigation, with nanoscale resolution, of the Ag metal-catalyst depth distribution profile during metal-assisted chemical etch (MACE) growth of Si nanowire (SiNW) arrays on Si(100). Given the very low optical reflectivity of these nanowire arrays, specular reflection from these materials in the X-ray region is extremely challenging to measure because it probes interfaces on the nanoscale.

We show that the buried interface between a metallic nanocrystal and its supporting substrate is essential for understanding the stability of the ubiquitous class of nanomaterials that grow on a wetting layer in the Stranski-Krastanov growth mode. Importantly, these new results reveal the broad role played by quantum confinement effects in the growth of thin nanoscale metals. In situ x-ray scattering experiments on Ag/Si(111)-(7×7), where the apparent minimum stable thickness of the first two atomic layers on top of the wetting layer has posed a long-standing puzzle, show that the commensurate wetting layer is locally removed by the formation of incommensurate nanoislands, which is unanticipated for the conventional Stranski-Krastanov growth mode.

We report on the study of insulator-to-metal transition in post-perovskite compound CaIrO3. It is discovered that a gradual chemical substitution of calcium by yttrium leads to the onset of strong metallic behavior in this compound. This observation is in stark contrast to BaIrO3, which preserves its Mott insulating behavior despite excess of the charge carriers due to yttrium doping.

AS MORPHOLOGY PLAYS A RELEVANT ROLE IN SOLID/SOLID CATALYSIS, WHERE THE NUMBER OF CONTACT POINTS IS A CRITICAL FEATURE IN THIS KIND OF REACTION, THREE DIFFERENT CERIA MORPHOLOGIES HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED IN THIS WORK AS SOOT OXIDATION CATALYSTS: ceria nanofibers, which can become organized as a catalytic network inside diesel particulate filter channels and thus trap soot particles at several contact points but have a very low specific surface area (4 m(2)/g); solution combustion synthesis ceria, which has an uncontrolled morphology but a specific surface area of 31 m(2)/g; and three-dimensional self-assembled (SA) ceria stars, which have both high specific surface area (105 m(2)/g) and a high availability of contact points. A high microporous volume of 0.03 cm(3)/g and a finer crystallite size compared to the other morphologies suggested that self-assembled stars could improve their redox cycling capability and their soot oxidation properties.

We evaluate the factors predictive of prognosis in 91 Caucasian patients affected by ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG), followed at our Institution during an observational time, ranging from 12 to 240 months. The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) clinical classification was used to grade the disease severity. We considered as outcome measures the variation in two subscores, ocular (O-QMG) and nonocular (NO-QMG); the last one reflected bulbar, neck, extremity functions.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the pharmacodynamics of a new multilayer-release (MLR) formulation methylphenidate (MPH; Biphentin) with immediate-release (IR) MPH (Ritalin) in a double-blind, cross-over, placebo-controlled study in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Method: Patients were randomized to equivalent doses of MPH as MLR (once per day), IR (twice per day) or placebo. Each treatment was taken for 1 week prior to repeated behavioral and cognitive laboratory evaluations on a single day in each phase of the crossover.
