Because of its implications for the therapeutic application of monoclonal antibodies, we have studied antigenic modulation in vitro and in vivo in patients receiving T101 monoclonal antibody. Incubation of normal peripheral blood T-cells, chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma cells with an excess of T101 at 37 degrees induced modulation of the T65 antigen. When assayed by indirect immunofluorescence, a change in cellular reactivity with T101 was seen after 1 hr.

We used phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance to test the ability of a perfluorocarbon blood substitute that has been shown in previous studies to improve oxygen delivery to hypothermic myocardium to maintain aerobic high-energy phosphate metabolism during total global ischemia. Twenty-three isolated perfused rabbit hearts were subjected to 180 min of hypothermic (23 degrees C) global ischemia followed by 45 min of normothermic reperfusion. Hearts received multiple doses of a cardioplegic solution that contained either oxygenated perfluorocarbon (Fluosol O2), nonoxygenated perfluorocarbon (Fluosol N2), or standard crystalloid hyperkalemic cardioplegic solution (STD-KCl) at 30 min intervals.

In the present study we tested the hypothesis that the facilitation of maternal behavior produced by amygdala lesions is mediated through the medial preoptic area. Different groups of animals sustained lesions of the corticomedial amygdala (Group AM), the medial preoptic area (Group MPOA), both regions (Group AM-MPOA), the corticomedial amygdala and non MPOA control sites (Group AM-CX), and control sites (Groups LC or SC). Parasagittal knife cuts along the medial preoptic area-medial anterior hypothalamus were placed at either the medial (near lateral or NL cuts) or lateral (far lateral or FL cuts) border o the medial forebrain bundle in separate groups of virgin (Experiment 1) and postparturient (Experiment 2) rats. FL cuts were placed so as to spare preoptic-hypothalamic efferent connections with the medial forebrain bundle. NL and FL knife cuts were equally effective in preventing the induction of maternal behaviour produced by repeated exposure of virgin rats to foster pups.

The diagnosis of Boutonneuse Fever usually depends on clinical evidence (summer occurrence, fever, tache noire at the site of the tick bite, in 30-70% of cases, erythemato -papular rash, prompt response to chloramphenicol or tetracycline treatment). Serological confirmation is difficult since the only diagnostic procedure currently feasible, the Weil-Felix test, is not specific. Other more specific diagnostic procedures (agglutination, complement fixation, ELISA, indirect immunofluorescence tests) are beyond the possibilities of most laboratories (antigens are not available from the market).

The hypothesis was tested that the weight loss shown by lactating hamsters constitutes a "regulated" weight loss. The results support the hypothesis: Prefattened overweight hamsters lost more weight from the time of mating to the end of lactation than did unmanipulated controls. However, the weight loss during lactation was reduced by giving hamsters access to a high-fat diet, a result indicating that a portion of the lactational weight loss may also be regulated by the diet provided.

Intakes of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates were measured daily for a 3 month period in female hamsters maintained on a fractionated diet consisting of the dietary constituents, dextrose, fat and soybean meal. In the first study, hamsters showed variations in body weight and fat intake across the estrous cycle and following ovariectomy, with elevations during diestrous and after ovariectomy when endogenous estrogens are reduced. In the second study, the effects of exogenous estradiol or cholesterol on intake patterns of ovariectomized hamsters were determined.

Although it has been reported that lesions of the medial preoptic area reduce ultrasonic vocalizations in female hamsters, the neural connections of this area important for ultrasound production have not been investigated. We, therefore, tested vocalizations in female hamsters following sagittal cuts along the medial preoptic area-medial anterior hypothalamic continuum (MPOA-MAH) at either the medial (Near Lateral or NL cuts) or lateral (Far Lateral or FL cuts) border of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB). Bilateral NL and FL cuts did not affect spontaneously occurring vocalizations or vocalizations occurring during contact with males, but were equally effective in substantially blocking increases in vocalizations following exposure to males.

Technique of counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) on cellulose acetate membrane (Cellogel) is described for diagnosis of (human and canine) visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Various lots of antigen were grossly obtained from the liquid phase (10, 20 and 30 tubes respectively) of cultures of Leishmania donovani by repeated freezing and thawing. Sera from patients (and, in a few cases, dogs) with confirmed VL, other parasitic and non-parastic diseases (especially blood disorders and hepatosplenomegaly) and from blood donors were tested.

A study was made of the behavior of the phosphoglucomutase (PGluM) and creatine phosphokinase (CPK) in the liver tissue of guinea pigs after chronic digitalis intoxication. It was found that the latter causes a statistically significant decrease of both enzymatic activities. The results obtained by the authors with this investigation, together with those of previous researchers, show that the toxic effect of digitalis on the enzymatic activities is not limited to the reported effect on the ATPase but also involves, at least at the doses and under the conditions used, other enzymatic activities.
