The swift progression of technology in electronic fabrication is adhering to a trend of miniaturization, descending to the nanoscale. Surface contaminants, such as nanoparticles, can influence the performance of silicon wafers, thereby necessitating the evolution of novel cleaning methodologies. Surface nanobubbles (SNs) are phenomena that have attracted considerable attention over the past decade.

The concept of Data Transportability (DT) of Confined Field Testing (CFT) to support the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) of Genetically Modified (GM) plants was first introduced in the literature by Garcia-Alonso et al., in 2014. Since then, DT has been discussed in many countries and regions as a concept to prevent duplication of regulatory studies without compromising quality of the ERA.

Background Since 2015, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Diffusion of Excellence Program has supported spread of practices developed by frontline employees. Shark Tank-style competitions encourage "Sharks" nationwide (VHA medical center/regional directors) to bid for the opportunity to implement practices at their institutions. Methods The authors evaluated bidding strategies (2016-2020), developing the "QuickView" practice comparator to promote informed bidding.

Article Synopsis
  • Coffee production in Kenya is declining despite rising global demand, with plant-parasitic nematodes posing a significant yet often overlooked threat to coffee plantations.
  • Two biocontrol agents were tested over two years in seven Arabica coffee field trials, showing a decline in nematode populations in treated trees and an improvement in soil health and microbial diversity.
  • While the treatments showed promise, stresses in the soils likely delayed their effectiveness, suggesting that longer studies might provide clearer benefits for managing nematode threats sustainably.

A 65-year-old male presented to the Ophthalmology clinic with painless loss of vision in his right eye. Over the previous week the right eye's vision had progressed from being blurry to complete loss. Three weeks prior to presentation he had begun treatment with pembrolizumab for urothelial carcinoma.

The present study sought to understand the antecedents to COVID-19 vaccination among those reporting a change in vaccine intention in order to improve COVID-19 vaccine uptake in the United States. We employed semi-structured interviews and one focus group discussion with vaccinated and unvaccinated Veterans Health Administration (VHA) employees and Veterans at three Veterans' Affairs medical centers between January and June 2021. A subset of these participants (n=21) self-reported a change in COVID-19 vaccine intention and were selected for additional analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • A 19-year-old woman with type 1 neurofibromatosis and sphenoid wing dysplasia experienced a fainting episode, leading to a lumbar puncture for investigation.
  • The cerebrospinal fluid analysis did not show any significant abnormalities, but she developed noticeable eye retraction (enophthalmos) on the same side as her skull anomaly 30 hours later.
  • The enophthalmos gradually improved over 72 hours, and it was suggested that it resulted from a drop in intracranial pressure from the lumbar puncture combined with her existing orbital bone issue.

Shared decision-making (SDM) for lung cancer screening (LCS) is recommended in guidelines and required by Medicare, yet it is seldom achieved in practice. The best approach for implementing SDM for LCS remains unknown, and the 2021 U.S.

Open access to sequence data is a cornerstone of biology and biodiversity research, but has created tension under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Policy decisions could compromise research and development, unless a practical multilateral solution is implemented.

The production of common bean ( L.) is adversely affected by virus-like diseases globally, but little is known about the occurrence, distribution, and diversity of common bean-infecting viruses in Zambia. Consequently, field surveys were conducted during the 2018 season in 128 fields across six provinces of Zambia and 640 common bean leaf tissue samples were collected with ( = 585) or without ( = 55) symptoms.

Background: Peer narratives engage listeners through personally relevant content and have been shown to promote lifestyle change and effective self-management among patients with hypertension. Incorporating key quotations from these stories into follow-up text messages is a novel way to continue the conversation, providing reinforcement of health behaviors in the patients' daily lives.

Objective: In our previous work, we developed and tested videos in which African American Veterans shared stories of challenges and success strategies related to hypertension self-management.

Rice genetic improvement is a key component of achieving and maintaining food security in Asia and Africa in the face of growing populations and climate change. In this effort, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) continues to play a critical role in creating and disseminating rice varieties with higher productivity. Due to increasing demand for rice, especially in Africa, there is a strong need to accelerate the rate of genetic improvement for grain yield.

Importance: Compared with the general population, veterans are at high risk for COVID-19 and have a complex relationship with the government. This potentially affects their attitudes toward receiving COVID-19 vaccines.

Objective: To assess veterans' attitudes toward and intentions to receive COVID-19 vaccines.

Shared decision-making (SDM) for lung cancer screening (LCS) is recommended by multiple organizations, reflecting a larger movement toward patient-centered care. Yet SDM for LCS does not routinely occur owing to barriers at multiple levels. Moreover, how best to implement SDM into routine clinical practice remains unknown.

Globally, Sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV) and Sweet potato chlorotic stunt virus (SPCSV) occur frequently and in combination cause sweetpotato virus disease (SPVD). Many viral diseases are economically important and negatively impact the production and movement of germplasm across regions. Rapid detection of viruses is critical for effective control.

Compositional analysis is an important component of an integrated comparative approach to assessing the food and feed safety of new crops developed using biotechnology. As part of the safety assessment of cassava brown streak disease resistant 4046 cassava, a comprehensive assessment of proximates, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, anti-nutrients, and secondary metabolites was performed on leaf and storage root samples of 4046 cassava and its non-transgenic parental control, TME 204, collected from confined field trials in Kenya and Uganda over two successive cropping cycles. Among the 100 compositional components that were assessed in samples of 4046 and control TME 204 cassava roots (47 components) and leaves (53 components), there were no nutritionally relevant differences noted.

During surveys for common bean viruses in Central Province of Zambia in April 2018, symptoms of bushy top, deep green curled branches and patchy leaf chlorosis were observed on five plants in a 2-ha farmer's field. Total RNA was isolated from symptomatic leaf samples using the CTAB method (Chang et al. 1993).

In this study, the effect of a Kenyan strain of (SPLCV) and its interactions with (SPFMV) and (SPCSV) on root yield was determined. Trials were performed during two seasons using varieties Kakamega and Ejumula and contrasting in their resistance to sweetpotato virus disease in a randomized complete block design with 16 treatments replicated three times. The treatments included plants graft inoculated with SPLCV, SPFMV, and SPCSV alone and in possible dual or triple combinations.

Restricted variation in numbers of presacral vertebrae in mammals is a classic example of evolutionary stasis. Cervical number is nearly invariable in most mammals, and numbers of thoracolumbar vertebrae are also highly conserved. A recent hypothesis posits that stasis in mammalian presacral count is due to stabilizing selection against the production of incomplete homeotic transformations at the lumbo-sacral border in fast-running mammals, while slower, ambulatory mammals more readily tolerate intermediate lumbar/sacral vertebrae.

The localization of (CBSV) in cassava () leaf tissues was determined and cellular morphological changes in CBSV-infected tissues were evaluated. CBSV-symptomatic leaves were screened with CBSV-specific primers using reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Immunohistochemical reactions showed precipitation in CBSV-infected but not CBSV-free tissues, demonstrating successful localization of CBSV.
