Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how sharing post-transfusion hemoglobin values with doctors could enhance the use of red blood cells (RBC) in a hospital.
  • - Researchers analyzed transfusion data over six months, finding low post-transfusion hemoglobin levels and a low percentage of patients achieving desirable hemoglobin levels before implementing their communication strategy.
  • - After sharing the data, RBC use dropped by 21%, fewer patients received transfusions, and post-transfusion hemoglobin slightly improved, showing that this feedback method effectively promoted better blood utilization.

Unlabelled: Many hospitals opt for early postnatal discharge of newborns with a potential risk of readmission for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Assays/algorithms with the possibility to improve prediction of significant neonatal hyperbilirubinemia are needed to optimize screening protocols and safe discharge of neonates. This study investigated the predictive value of umbilical cord blood (UCB) testing for significant hyperbilirubinemia.
