The association between inhibitory control and alcohol use has been well established. However, studies comparing the effects of alcohol cues on disinhibition in heavy and light drinkers have reported mixed results. The present study used a crowdsourcing platform, Prolific, to assess the effects of alcohol-related cues on inhibitory control in light drinkers versus heavy drinkers.

Rationale: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has been shown to be associated with a dysregulated stress system. Reducing the stress hormone corticosterone (CORT), that binds to glucocorticoid receptors, may attenuate the rewarding properties of drugs of abuse. However, the effect of blocking corticosterone receptors on ethanol reward has yet to be investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • Relapse-like behaviors in animals were studied using the Pavlovian conditioned approach model, where a neutral cue (conditioned stimulus) is paired with a reward to elicit a conditioned response.
  • Sign tracking (STing) refers to the tendency to respond to the cue, and research shows that sign-trackers have higher rates of drug-taking behaviors, although most studies focus on male subjects.
  • This experiment with female Japanese quail demonstrated that they also exhibit STing, suggesting the influence of visual cues on relapse behaviors, which could help in developing treatments for drug addiction.

The conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm is commonly used to investigate the motivational properties of drugs of abuse. Cues in the environment may become paired with these motivational properties and later result in drug seeking. Because many of these alcohol-paired cues are visual, Japanese quail may be a beneficial model to examine visual cue-induced alcohol seeking behavior.
