The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of violence on depressive symptoms in women. We analyzed panel data from the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (  =  6,632). Exposure to sexual violence was a significant predictor of the onset of depressive symptoms.

Reports of sexual violence against young women have been increasing. Due to limited support, young women who experience sexual violence have difficulties in healing, resulting in long-term consequences for individuals and society. We used grounded theory combined with a Photovoice approach to explore young women's experience of healing from sexual violence.

The recombinant human growth hormone (GH) has been used for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) and diverse short stature state, and its physiological and therapeutic effects are well documented. However, since the effect of GH treatment on metabolic disorders has not been well characterized, we injected GH to Western diet-fed low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient ( ) mice to understand the exact effect of GH on metabolic diseases including atherosclerosis, hepatic steatosis, and obesity. Exogenous GH treatment increased plasma IGF-1 concentration and decreased body weight without affecting serum lipid profiles.

Methods: For this secondary analysis study, panel data for Waves 4 through 6 of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women were used. Women aged 40 to 60 who were menstruating at Wave 4 were included in the analysis (N = 5,437).

Transfer-RNA-mediated enhancement of ribosomal proteins S6 kinases signaling for cell proliferation.

While transfer-RNAs (tRNAs) are known to transport amino acids to ribosome, new functions are being unveiled from tRNAs and their fragments beyond protein synthesis. Here we show that phosphorylation of 90-kDa RPS6K (ribosomal proteins S6 kinase) was enhanced by tRNA overexpression under amino acids starvation condition. The phosphorylation of 90-kDa RPS6K was decreased by siRNA specific to tRNA and was independent to mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) signaling.

Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) has generally demonstrated that a differentiated cell can convert into a undifferentiated or pluripotent state. In the SCNT experiment, nuclear reprogramming is induced by exposure of introduced donor nuclei to the recipient cytoplasm of matured oocytes. However, because the efficiency of SCNT still remains low, a combination of SCNT technique with the ex-ovo method may improve the normal development of SCNT embryos.

Evaluation of VCAM-1 antibodies as therapeutic agent for atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice.

Objective: Blocking agents targeting cell adhesion molecules have been developed to prevent cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, whereas relatively little attention has been paid to the therapeutic potential of vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 as an inflammatory disease target. Two novel, fully human antibodies, H6 and 7H, against human VCAM-1 (hVCAM-1) were developed and tested to validate the hypothesis that blocking VCAM-1 ameliorates atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE(-/-)) mice.

Methods And Results: Treatment with H6 or 7H effectively inhibited VCAM-1 adhesion to inflammatory cells, and reduced RhoA activation and the production of reactive oxygen species in human umbilical cord vascular endothelial cells.

Isolation of side population cells in B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

Background: Side population (SP) cells are characterized by the ability to exclude Hoechst 33342 dye due to high expression of the ATP-binding cassette transporter. This ability is associated with drug-resistant characteristics of cancer stem cells.

Methods: We analyzed SP cells from human B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cell lines and primary cells derived from patients and compared them with non-SP (NSP) cells.

Effect of Sophora flavescens Aiton extract on degranulation of mast cells and contact dermatitis induced by dinitrofluorobenzene in mice.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The dried root of Sophora flavescens Aiton (Sophorae radix, SR) has long been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of fever and swelling in eastern countries.

Materials And Methods: The present study investigated the anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects of SR using 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced contact dermatitis mouse model and in vitro using RBL-2H3 cells.

Results: In mice, the topical application of 10 mg/mL of SR effectively inhibited enlargement of ear thickness and weight induced by repeated painting with DNFB.
